What do we REALLY think about the weight loss jabs?

Newbabynewhouse · 20/09/2026 21:52

I've put this on AIBU rather than weight loss jab because I want a neutral audience rather than people who are all using the jab.
What are peoples thoughts on the jab? I'd love to hear from someone educated in the medical field about whether these are actually safe for people without diabetes.
I'm obese and I have lost a stone so far by dieting although it's taking me a long time! I know if I keep trying hard I can lose what I need to. Lots of people I know have started dropping weight from using the jabs and I am tempted however, can't shake a feeling that there's something not quite right.
What I mean by this is... these jabs have been around for years for diabetic people, so why have they only just been 'released' to people despite obesity effecting the NHS for years?
I know a woman who fainted in work the other day with gallbladder issues, she's on the jab.
Also, I'm going to sound a little conspiracy theorist now, but, isn't it odd these jabs became popular straight after people starting refusing to have more covid jabs..?.. I'd love to hear from people with a bit of background info or medical professionals to tell me whether I'm overthinking or if I'm onto something?

Honestly, I think it's a licenced prescription medication for a medical issue and not really anyone else's business. Sorry. No one is making threads asking about other medications but because we think other people's weight is our business to judge, we think they have the right to an opinion on it. We don't.

And yes, I'm on Mounjaro. I get it from a reputable pharmacy, fit the clinical requirements for it, and don't see it as anyone else's business, same as any other medication I take.

My DD has been on MJ for 12 months now, she's lost over 5 stone and looks and feels great. Still a bit of a way to go as her BMI is currently in the overweight category. She has PCOS and despite a healthy lifestyle, careful diet and lots of exercise, her weight unfortunately continued to increase.

there is an inner glow about her that I've noticed with other women who have recently lost a fair bit of weight (and I'm assuming are also on the jabs) where they clearly feel really good about themselves...

I’ve noticed that, I’ve now 7 friends, a mix of male and female on them and they all look much healthier, I assume as they are actually much healthier, the puffy bloated look is gone, their skin brighter, their eyes brighter, they just look healthier.

obesity causes so so much damage to our bodies, that reversing it and correcting the metabolic processes, shines through.

i assume it’s in part also due to reduced alcohol, or reduced fats and sugars, increased proteins and veg, a healthier diet, and better hydration, ie more water, that does it, with the improvements in the health of internal organs. That people just look healthier.

I think we are all very well aware of the risks of gallbladder issues. It's mentioned in all the literature, in the patient info leaflet that comes with the medication, on the online consult forms, in the information on pharmacy websites, in their email communications, via their apps and endlessly mentioned on discussion threads about WLI on here. You'd have to be particularly inobservant to miss all of that.

Apparently not all are very well aware of the risks of gallbladder issues.

No. But it is a potential side-effect.

Are you all right?

What’s really sad is that they aren’t available to everyone who might benefit.

I agree!

We are not well off at all, I have had to sacrifice a lot of things to be able to afford it, but sometimes that just isn't possible for people.

What I would say though is that if there is any way at all you can, it really is worth every single penny.

Really? Why are people so aggressive about people having a discussion about health?

Many of us who are completely unbothered by or uninterested in our own weights or those of other people and pay no attention to this have friends or family who are taking/ are considering taking these drugs so we are concerned about the risks.

People also rightly may have concerns about the costs to taxpayers of treating side effects especially in cases where there have been private prescriptions without proper medical oversight and outside the NHS criteria, so no detailed cost/ benefit analysis has been done of the savings to the NHS of moderately overweight people using the drugs versus the cost of treating those who develop side effects which sometimes can be very severe. It’s obviously pertinent that there’s emerging evidence that these are more prevalent in cases where they are used only for weight loss not just to treat diabetes, if the findings of the study quoted by the PP are accurate.

It’s also of general public concern that pharmacies are able to prescribe medication based on self-reported forms which may be inaccurate/ misrepresent/ omit information because that is a safety issue that could affect prescribing of many other drugs as well. Perhaps there should be a better system where patients need to download an actual copy of their medical records from the NHS app to submit with online prescription requests, as a safeguard.

There are clearly various reasons why people who do not need or want these drugs have a legitimate interest in this discussion. It’s quite a leap to assert we are all “jealous” of obese/ severely overweight people who are feeling so desperate and worried about their weight that they feel taking drugs is the only way they can successfully address this. Why would anybody be jealous of someone in that situation?!

It’s no different to other medications ordered from online pharmacies by completing a declaration. I have ordered other medication from pharmacies such as Boots. Private prescriptions are available for all sorts of medications. As a previous poster said, it’s only WLIs that people seem to have an issue with.

My prescriber advises my GP every time they send me a prescription and they’re all listed on my NHS app. My GP is fully aware.

I don't take unnecessary medications, and as I said earlier, as I value the function of my digestive system, I would not touch WLI with a barge pole.

True, sometimes you can cut all you like but not find enough cash. Right now I’m economising as much as I can because of the ever increasing price of heating oil and winter looming (thanks Trump 😡) for one thing. I’m pleased they are working well for you!

WLI are not unnecessary to some, which is why they’re prescribed.

Your pain threshold may be lower than mine, so you take paracetamol sooner, should I judge you for that? Tell you to be stronger?

Not sure why you deemed my post as mockery? You’re saying that the potential side effects outweigh the benefits, but all drugs have this issue.

MindThePause · 21/09/2026 14:06

Thanks to instagram being aware that I’m hacked off with the extra 10kg (+6kg that I don’t mind) menopause gifted me I now regularly see advertising posts for them here in Italy.

I’m torn between wanting to buy them cos am very hacked off with the 10kg. And not wanting to cos I really don’t want to risk feeling nausea or getting constipated.

I’m waiting until it finally stops being Too Fecking Hot and seeing if increased movement + rather more restraint in attacking the fridge contents kick starts things after the sloth-like state I’ve been in after nearly five months of a july like heat and a lot of lying down whinging that I’m all hot and sweaty.

Just my bloody luck that the whole world was all body positive, right up until the minute I get fat, and then we are allegedly heading back to Heroin Chic.

The super skinny look is not the ball park I wish to live in again. The one benefit of the 10kg (and its other 6kg friend that I don’t wish to lose) is how much warmer I am in winter and my bones not hurting each other by banging each other if I turn over too quickly in bed. But I’m not chuffed at looking pregnant. However I finally have big boobs. And they will probably wander off first if I attempt to take on the belly.

I will eat a cake and then ponder further on the conundrum. I tried my Big Squeezy Knickers yesterday, but I don’t think I looked any smaller and felt like I was in the clutches of a particularly sadistic boa constrictor. So that’s not the answer either.

I have no idea what covid has to do with anything.

Greenmouldycheese · 21/09/2026 14:12

I think they come with their issues, just like all medication and if the people who use them think its worth the risk, then so be it. I know so many people who are taking those jibs whisky theyve never felt better and have said they will never come off them. Some people have taken it too far and now look ill, but they are happy.

@MindThePause but are you obese with your 10kg or 16kg (?) to lose? Surely the thought process is about the benefit to your long term health of a prescription obesity treatment, rather than about fashion trends?

No one is asking you to take them, I have no idea why you keep posting you won’t, like someone wishes you to. No one on here cares enough or even knows you, you don’t need to be so worried. You don’t need to take them, you can calm down.

Why do you think that you’ve got any right to comment negatively on anyone’s health choices? About potential side effects? You seem to be saying your “worried”, no you’re judging?

Then you’re being snarky with “are you alright” comments or telling people their posts are “mockery”.

Your posts are judgemental and viewing people that use WLI are not intelligent enough to be able to risk
assess.

Honestly, the very vast majority of us are just fine, so please take your mock concern elsewhere!

Being obese is the ‘less healthy option’.

Of course, but many users of WLIs are not obese.

Zempy · 21/09/2026 14:48

LifeOnEnceladus · 21/09/2026 13:14

I don’t think it is particularly difficult to prepare meals at 1350 calories per day if someone plans meals sensibly and eats regular portion sizes. It’s certainly perfectly possible because that’s precisely what people do as a result of taking these drugs or when they diet naturally! Normal calorie intake for a woman should be 1600-2000 calories and only at the higher end of that if you are quite tall/ young/ very active (which most obese people are not). For weight loss 1200 to 1500 is quite normal so I don’t think 1350 is extreme? It just means making slightly healthier choices for most meals.

If someone has diabetes or pre-diabetes or insulin resistance etc causing metabolic issues then of course the balance of risks and benefits will be different (although often things like insulin resistance are of course caused in the first place by poor diet/ over eating/ lack of exercise).

My comment was not about people who have other separate health conditions which the drug has been shown to improve, but people who are taking these drugs purely for weight loss.

I believe you when you tell me you wouldn’t find that difficult.

Please believe me when I tell you I found it impossible without medication.

@MindThePause but are you obese with your 10kg or 16kg (?) to lose? Surely the thought process is about the benefit to your long term health of a prescription obesity treatment, rather than about fashion trends?

Overweight.

And not by just a smidge.

I’d be lying if I said the combo of super skinny (my former body) coming back and the sudden appearance of weight loss jabs available online in Italy weren’t combining to create an increased frustration with the extra 10kg I want to lose (which would put me back in the right weight zone) and extra poking at my belly muttering “why won’t you fuck off already? I ate lentils you bastard !”

I’m just really averse to the idea of nausea and constipation as side effects. Which is so far the major reason why I haven’t clicked through any links and ordered a jab.

Long term health considerations can’t get a word in edgeways when I’m struggling into my last pair of “big” jeans and looking pregnant.
