Am I being unreasonable to say we should be doing more to prevent AI wiping out humanity? YANBU - we need to do more YABU - it’s too hard to solve this problem so we just have to let AI kill us all/it’s never going to happen anyway

Is there a way to switch off all the electricity that AI runs on - if it goes rogue and starts to unleash nuclear weapons for example?
Are AI experts attempting to teach AI to behave in a moral and ethical way?
Are tech experts putting enough safeguards in place - to protect us from plausible dangers eg bad agent’s engineering deadly pathogens?
Is the government prepping for an AI induced breakdown on infrastructure on a massive scale?
Can you think of ways we can help ourselves?

People use AI. AI is not left to run amok. You dont teach it, you use it, you steer it. It's only an assistant.

Statements of such staggering naivety and misinformation, like this, are what we’re up against people.

Many just don’t understand it. The issue is so much more complex than ‘nuclear missile’ that people like this are reassuring themselves on nonsense.

No matter how many times we post the articles and the essays explaining it they can’t understand it.

Possibly because they don't actually bother to read the articles. Or even a lot of the comments.

I know… sometimes I think that if AI does go rogue, it’s our own fault.

Reminds me of the nuclear war paranoia of the 1980s
Some people do need some help to get them back to earth.

It didn’t seem like paranoia as a teen in the 80s. Half the music was about the four minute warning and it was either that or AIDS that was going to finish us off.

On the plus side it made my generation far more nihilistic so the idea of being wiped out by AI or anything else holds little fear. People are so busy fucking up the planet that it feels like we are kind of due.

Have you heard a Hiroshima survivor speak? At the Hiroshima museum? If you had you would not be so damn blasé.

Because they’ve created something knowing that people will lose their jobs and it will self-train. They’ve made this technology knowing it has the potential to be uncontrollable.

I see even Elon has joined the calls to slow this all down and have a think.

That said, Trump says it’s all going to be fine, so I feel very reassured.

It's mind blowing when you hear AI experts talking of the grave risks to ending humanity and the short timescale of such a possibility. So many experts are handing in their notice in protest. It's beyond my level of understanding. What I do know is that mega data centres are being built all of the world. These mammoth constructions are using scarce resources Water and electricity for what? To power AI that will eventually kill us all? Humans are enabling AI with the infrastructure and is it not too late to put the brakes on? AI could bring so much good such as in health and research to find cures for terrible diseases which is already happening.

Singularity is the point when AI starts thinking for itself....then our future is questionable.

I’ve never used Siri or Alexa or an AI bot. It just doesn’t appeal. Half the time when I hear my husband using Siri the bloody thing doesn’t work and then I laugh at him barking ‘Siri!’ and getting frustrated, by which time he could have just Googled his question.

When was the last time you heard of something so powerful being used for good? Humans are destructive and greedy and this is the natural consequence

We've know about the climate crisis for 50 years and I don't see govts working together to help solve any of it so like hell are they going to work together to solve this. We are so utterly stupid it just beggars belief

I am beginning to wonder if some AI CEOs will start to go along with this mainly because it gives them a way out of maybe not having a workable business model.

Businesses are already hitting having to budget control for the token costs of using AI compute and it's not necessary working out as cheaper or more effective than human labour, while AI still isn't really turning a profit or impressing businesses in terms of clear positive outcomes.

Safety concerns might be accepted not because founders really believe them, but because it gives them an 'out' from an unsustainable business scenario.

I mean we are very well on the way to destroying ourselves probably a race between AI and men (and it will be men) as to who will push the button first. I just hope it's quick. We haven't cared sufficiently about saving us from the total morons various elected to rule the world why would we try and save ourselves from AI.

It has ramped up my anxiety big time. I'm annoyed as I know little about it and the 10pc statistic seems to be arbitrary. I just don't need this anxiety RN, tbh. If AI is really gonna wipe us out do it quickly please AI not cut off food and water leaving us a slow agonising death

I think that we are possibly more at risk of our brains rotting, if we allow AI to do and think up things for us! I imagine that the world will be like 'Idiocracy' (a film where someone takes part in a military hibernation experiment, gets forgotten about, wakes up quite far in the future, and the human population is ridiculously stupid).

If all else fails, I aspire to move to a very remote area anyway, where AI might not find me (like in Robert Cormier's Z for Zachariah).

I think it’s great that people take action however it is unfortunately akin to pissing in the wind whilst the leaders of large countries like the US have an attitude of ‘whoever wins AI, wins’.

It really is like unilateral disarmament only worse - it’s easy for a powerful country to target anywhere else (in fact multiple simultaneously) at the press of a key. And with deniability.

The only chance we have is to keep up with it as well as possible.
