AIBU to expect something bad whenever life seems to be going well?

Does anyone have this? I am a relatively well balanced individual I think but have a tendency to be a pessimist and expect bad things will happen, especially when good things happen, iyswim.

Examples:

  • finally bought house after decade of savings: imagining everything that could do wrong and hidden issues that will cost a fortune to fix
  • husband finally gets a better job for his career: worry things will change in our family balance or relationship (absolutely all in my head)
  • Things generally going well for us all: worrying about health problems
it’s as if I don’t feel we deserve good things and if things go well I need to identify potential problems on the horizon. I hate this. Anyone else the same?

I have definitely felt like this. When I met my partner I was floating on air for the first few months but in the back of my head I was terrified he was going to be hit by a car or something. I have a theory that it’s because on tv shows and films they show everyone really happy and thriving just before something awful happens, so that’s what my brain expects.

Lots of people will identify with this. But it’s a learned behaviour. You do deserve to be happy and nothing bad has to happen.

YANBU. I refer to it as The Fuckening.

Ive been like this all my life.
If there is anything positive about it , it has made me not be a bragged.
Im a cheerful happy person on the whole but I do expect things to go bad.

Yes I do. I think I’ll get to 88 rocking in my chair and get pissed off with the amount of time I wasted worrying something will happen.
of course the shit hits the fan every so often and I deal with it but the amount of tome I’ve wasted waiting for it to happen is bloody stupid. I need to just relax

This is a very interesting theory and I never thought about that! I hate the fact that sonething bad always has to happen in films!

They do say that worrying is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but it doesn't get you anywhere.😀
