I met up with my mum recently, we don’t live very near but the whole time she kept asking me to repeat myself as she said she thought she must be losing her hearing.

Dh has kept asking me to repeat myself over the last few weeks too and started wondering if there’s something wrong with his hearing.

I made an important phone call today with a very apologetic lady who thought she must be losing her hearing.

My children keep asking me to repeat myself.

I called out to the usually friendly neighbour who didn’t respond.

Today my child’s teacher had a quick chat but kept asking me to repeat myself because she couldn’t hear very well.

Lastly we just popped into the pharmacy for my prescription and I had to say my very simple last name 3 times before being asked to spell it because the man behind the counter said he was a being a bit deaf.

It’s not a bad hearing epidemic is it?

Am I losing my hearing? Would that make my voice quieter ?To me I sound the same.

All the posters suggesting the OP’s hearing must be the issue - are ignoring the fact @jaysrocks can hear perfectly well as it’s not her asking anyone to repeat themselves.

I can’t understand why you haven’t sad down with your husband and asked him to be honest about whether you’re mumbling or why he thinks people are repeatedly asking you to repeat yourself

I have had low iron levels in the past, post partum.

Might also be worth getting your thyroid levels checked, because an underactive thyroid gland can also change your voice.

It might also be that you've just strained your voice a bit.

There are some neurological conditions that can affect voice volume too - my father spoke increasingly quietly as his Parkinson's progressed - but you'd certainly have noticed other symptoms if that was the case, so it's much more likely to be something completely non-serious.

I’m intrigued about all the deleted posts???

good luck OP! Good advice from PPs

I had this very issue! Everyone kept asking me to speak up, and I’d be thinking ‘but I sound perfectly normal’! Turned out to be earwax build-up.

Does that mean that I'd you do deal with the problem it isn't a dementia indicator?

I have some concerns about a family member and would like to understand why not dealing with the issue would be an indicator, I can't work it out

I don’t think the direction of causality is fully understood. Or the nature of the relationship. I’ve heard some specialists speculate that if people are hard of hearing or can’t engage properly then they inevitably get left out, which has co sequences. But the mere presence of unattended hearing loss is a significant dementia indicator

Did you have trouble hearing others?

Did you have trouble hearing others?

I didn’t think I did particularly, but then when I had the wax cleared out (a process which was both gross and satisfying!) everyone immediately sounded SO loud so I think I’d just adjusted over time.
