AIBU to ask if boys starting puberty before 9 is unusual

To ask you to tell me if your boys hit puberty before they turned 9.

Don’t want to be too outing but wondering how unusual it is before I bother the GP. He has no point of reference above and beyond age appropriate material so he’s not doing anything inappropriate but I want to protect him - neuro diverse.

What did you do? Anything, nothing? Any advice?

Go see the GP. Below 9 is literally the definition of precocious puberty in boys. If the GP confirms signs of puberty he will likely need referring to see at least a paediatrician, possibly a paediatric endocrinologist.

Protect him from what? You jump from puberty to a point of reference, about what?

Are you talking about physical puberty or behaviour?

Do you have any experience or are you just nosey? It’s a sensitive subject and I feel like I’m betraying him. If you have advice then feel free to share it without knowing the ins and outs of a child’s difficult life.

DS started developing very early with pubic hair etc (long before 9)
I took him to GP who did hospital referral - they said he was just about in normal limits but would monitor and predicted his adult height as 6’7”
DS is now an adult - stopped at 6’4” and is rather hirsute!

puberty at 8. I would urge you to see the GP and ask for a referral to paediatrics. They will properly asses his bone age , the biggest risk, apart from inappropriate behaviour is small stature when his bones fuse. This is because if you start your pubertal growth spurt at say 4ft 6’ you may end up at 5’ 2”. If you don’t start will you are 5’2” already, that same 8” growth will leave you at 5’10. … my son ended at 5’6 or so because in the end we did not delay his puberty (with advice)

I did not have as much information as the parents, but a pupil of mine (Year 4, so 8 or 9 yrs} was put on puberty blockers because of this, and they kept me up to date on his progress.
Apparently, this was advised because if the adolescent growth begins early, it will finish early, and since he was not tall for his age, this would left him well below average height as an adult. The medication continued until the beginning of Yr 6, when it is more common for some boys to enter puberty, although many will begin later.
He ended up quite short in stature, but not noticeably so.
Your GP may not feel this is necessary in his case, but it might well be worth a check.

Physical puberty. Hairs on testicles. Highly interested in others’ body parts. Lots of talk about romantic relationships but he only has the understanding that has been taught that is age appropriate. He is ND so that is an added worry that he will internalise his worries.
