Barbecues on terraces. Yes or No

What are your thoughts on barbecues on terraces?

There are in total 25 apartments in the block. Each apartment has its own small outdoor terrace.

One of the residents often has a barbecue on theirs. Other residents complain about the smell and potential fire hazard.

The barbecuing resident cannot find anything in the lease that prohibits this.

The complaining neighbours cite common sense and consideration.

It's unusual that there's nothing prohibiting them.

I can’t see how it’s any worse or dangerous than smoking on the terrace which I imagine plenty of people do.

If it’s not in the lease, then the complainants needs to stop the hand wringing, pearl clutching and using bullying statements like common sense and consideration!

Some people did ask how others would feel if they did this

it was universally agreed that it was unfair and antisocial. There is nothing to forbid it in the lease so I’m sure some wanker will do it eventually but so far nobody has. But then they might end up with a few dogs hanging around waiting for sausages…. that might not bother them of course.

does it depend how many items you cook? I do think I’ve seen some sort of closed cooking apparatus on someone’s terrace but if it’s just him cooking a couple of burgers, that’s not the same as if my mum’s neighbours have a barbecue which can be smelt a mile around. And seems to give off a lot of smoke.

Have the other residents checked the lease? When my son owned a leasehold flat in a block there was a specific ban on barbecues and firepits.

If not then the others have to rely on the goodwill of the barbecuer. Given so many people are inconsiderate these days I doubt it will stop.
It's the same as living next door to someone who barbecues right next to the fence. Nothing you can do about it if they refuse to stop.

Fire is fire. If you’re careful with you’re generally fine, if you’re not careful with it you’re fucked.

Well quite.

So apartment blocks generally prohibit these things because they know that some people aren't careful.

But it's a lot easier to burn a block down with a BBQ than a fag, due to the fuel.

If it’s not in the lease agreement or prohibited by the fire department it should be fine.

I have a balcony that size. I’m top floor and only have neighbours below me - it crossed my mind a couple of times this summer whether I could get away with having a barbecue, but there would probably be a post on Mumsnet about it 😆

Charcoal bbq no, gas bbq maybe, ninja electric bbq or equivalent, definitely ok.

This. I can see an issue with the ground floor very close to everyone’s windows, but not on the top floor. Haven’t voted but I’d say the BBQ people ANBU
