There’s no place like home

I must be getting old because holidays don’t hold the same appeal anymore. So much faff. Someone is always too hot. So expensive. Anyone with me or am I a miserable old person now?

I still love the idea of a holiday, but the reality is that having to get to the airport ridiculously early followed by the hassle of security issues so off-putting. Then being squashed in a seat designed for someone much shorter than me for 3+ hours. That's before we even get to our destination!

I think it depends where you go. Holidays don’t have to be holidays abroad or a long way off. It’s nice to have a short break and it’s nice to get home. So in my view the trick is to find something that you’d like to do or a place where you’d like to go and do that.

I’m enjoying much shorter breaks these days, 4 nights in Cape Verde, 4 nights in Tenerife, 2 nights UK camping etc… it seems to have removed a lot of the pre holiday stress for me. I no longer hate packing for 4 of us as there’s so much less to take and we’ve been making do with the clothes we already have (as it’s only a few nights) so I haven’t had to pre-shop either. 4-5 nights seems to be affordable too and just the right amount for our family of 4 (2 teenagers) to enjoy each others company without getting on each others nerves.

That said… I can see myself and H taking a 2 week break in the future where we can do absolutely nothing but eat and chill-out reading in the sunshine. Now that would be worth the pre-holiday faff!

I live for holidays. I always try to have the next one planned before we come home. Doesn’t have to be that exciting…. Our next one is a road trip to a beautiful location for three nights.

Why are you packing for everyone? Holidays would be less stressful if everyone sorted their own stuff.

Yes, holidays without kids are a whole different ball game!

Like a pp I live for holidays, absolutely have to have something planned whether it be camping in the UK or a tropical beach. But then I've never been much of a homebody.

Yanbu though, plenty of people prefer being home or going on shorter breaks.

We’re an extremely busy family, so it’s just easier if I do it, even though it’s very stressful.

We have got into short breaks aswell, 4 night’s is my preferred. See a cheap flight, get it booked & then sort out accommodation. Packing just hand luggage is so liberating not ive got the hang of it& i keep a bag full of small size toiletries ready to go.

I've always been a 'homie' - nowhere in the world I'd rather be. Travelled in my 20's but it made me realise how much I like to nest, in my own four walls, with my pets. Bliss.

I still love holidays but I never go anywhere hot - a city break in northern Europe and I am a happy woman! Short flight, four nights maximum and then back to your own bed. Best of all worlds!

Oh I love holidays. I have proper wanderlust.

By the end of the year, if you count weekends away as well, I will have had 9 holidays totaling about 71 nights in 2026. Only 2 of which involves flying and one involves ferries (but still UK)

I would have more if I could. I love researching and planning trips and exploring new places.

I am already starting to plan next year's holidays. Even writing this post thinking about holidays makes me feel happy and excited.

Often holidays can be used to escape the heat. It's been 35+ for most of the summer in most of England, so going up north or to Scotland offers respite.
