AIBU for telling my manager about previous workplace bullying?

I told my manager (she has been in the role 3 years) today about my past experience of workplace bullying, it was 7 years ago it happened and now I'm thinking why the heck have I told her. I did it because sometimes I'm still affected by it and things at work seem to bother me more than other staff.
I feel really silly telling her and feel vulnerable now.

It was 7 years ago and in a different job… I would be wondering why you had mentioned it yes .

What made you bring it up? Were you just chatting over drinks after work, or has there been a slight altercation at work and discussing this just led you back to the bullying situation, or did you just simply march over to her and off-load past experiences to her?

It really depends on how the situation was brought up as to whether you should or should not feel stupid for doing so.

It’s fine. There was an incident relating to bullying at my old employer which ended tragically and had a huge impact on me. I told my manager even though it happened years ago because it informs my management style and the fact that I am somewhat overprotective of my staff.

I'm sure it made sense in the conversation at the time. Trust your instincts!
None of us were there.
I find my social anxiety postmortem is much less reliable than my instincts in the moment about what to say

@Fidgety31 same job just a different manager

@LittleMissFooled incident at work that I guess made the memories come back

Then that’s fine. Nothing to feel silly about. It was relevant to the situation at the time.

You don’t say what her response was?

Agatha1989 · 05/09/2026 09:39

Don’t feel silly for admitting a past experience affected you. I was bullied by a godawful woman when I was in my early thirties, struggling with childcare and working full time, and looking back, I don’t know why I didn’t do anything about it. I’d go home and cry. I should have gone to HR or my union.

Don’t feel silly, it will explain why you are/do things a certain way now and lets them know what you’ve been through.
