AIBU to ask my partner about STI risk after postnatal bleeding?

NC for this

I had the copper coil fitted 5 months ago during a C section and I am still having intermittent spotting and bleeding after sex - the blood is very pink mixed with mucus. I saw a nurse today to check the coil's placement as I thought that could be the cause but she said it is all fine and I need to have swabs taken for infection etc. I asked her to check for atrophy given I am breastfeeding and because of the hormones but she said she couldn't and was generally unhelpful.

No appointments are available for 3 weeks. My mum was a sexual health nurse and she said I should go to the STI clinics so now I am worried. It is difficult for me to get there with a baby and their opening times are limited.

I don't want to wait 3 weeks to find out whether or not I have an STI; is it reasonable to tell my partner what happened today and ask him if I should know anything?

My dad and my ex cheated so I am probably more suspicious than the average person

What matters is your health. Ask him and get him to look after his child whilst you get medical attention - I hope you are ok

Did your mum mention the STI clinic because they often deal with coils and other gyne issues? Or definitely for an STI check? Because most STI checks are done through ordering a kit online, self testing and sending the stuff to be tested
ETA infection might mean something completely unrelated to an STI.

I had a copper coil fitted and bled for months. I also had a mirena coil fitted over 12months ago and have bled on and off since.

@Crumpledsmileyes I think that is why but I guess there is also a possibility of an STI. I have calmed down now - I have managed to get a GP appt for Tues where they will do tests and I will only confront bf if necessary, which i hope it isn't

I would see your GP to discuss. Spotting is common for months after coil fitting.

The practitioners at a sexual health clinic will be able to assess your health down there more thoroughly than a practice nurse, it doesn't have to be because you have an STI they often see women with ectropions, atrophy, inflammation from coils etc and van refer you to Gynae if needed. The coil is the most likely cause. I think it would definitely be unreasonable at this stage to ask your partner if they've possibly given you an STI and could cause a huge problem in your relationship if it turns out to be inflammation from the coil or something else.

If he has been cheating while you have a 5 month old he’s unlikely to own up just because you ask him, so I imagine you would be waiting the 3 weeks + results time regardless.
But I always thought spotting could be a very common side effect of the coil.

I had a copper coil for 5 years and spotted on and off during that whole time.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 04/09/2026 18:40

Get the coil out and tell him to use condoms

Results are back - all negative. Glad I didn't say anything!
