Hiya all

AIBU, I started a new job as a support worker and one of the colleagues is so ignorant, I've tried to take a calm, slightly detached approach and continue to be polite to her, if I walk past her, i simple say “morning”. Etc

I get no response, this is for the 5th time, I haven't upset her or anything other than I'm new, she doesn't respond or even acknowledge me, my bf got me a job with her, she's also good friends with this colleague.

I just don't understand the need to be rude to me.
Would you just start to ignore her back, I swear it's like a kid in a playground I'm two old for this crap and making me feel awkward.

Well of course. Why on earth would you continue to say 'hello' to someone who never responds? I would made 2 attempts, 3 at the most.

What happens if you talk to her? If you ask her directly a question about work or something? Does she reply then?

No, double down. Try and get a high five. Sing songs about the morning "Wake up it's a beautiful morning" "Morning glory". Prepare a dance routine.

I would ignore her right back. One less Christmas card to have to write.

The issue is We have to work together supporting disabled adults and it's going to be very awkward trying to do that if she isn't interested in communicating. In a office or something else I would probably have just ignored her back, but how can she be like this in a care setting.

I'd ignore her as in ignore her silly moodiness. Carry on saying 'Morning!', and don't let her get a reaction out of you. Act like you haven't noticed that she ignores you and keep things bright and breezy.

I would do a version of this. I have a couple of colleagues who are moody and are always falling out with different people. When it’s my turn to be ignored I double down with the good mornings, how are you etc just to annoy them. I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing them bristle - one of them visibly bristles 😂

This! Keep it bright and cheery, smile and say 'morning' like you haven't noticed she ignores you. It makes you the better person whilst also really winding her up because her rudeness is being ignored 😁

When you make a mistake in etiquette the royals are trained to appear not to notice and just carry on as if the mistake had never occurred. \do the same. Continue to say good morning and act as if she had replied.

I have this same problem at work. 2 employees who are very much my junior in education and salary. Barely speak at me let alone to me. I am the senior person many days in the office and handle all concerns and needs and complaints. They are an adjacent dept employees and I don’t supervise them altho they interact with me
my staff and my patients.

I say good morning once upon the first encounter. Typically my feet are moving as I say it and I just keep walking to my office. I don’t trust them so I feel saying hello is the minimal acceptable interaction and yet its still
very awkward to be consistently ignored. I don’t want them to complain to HR about anything I say or don’t say so I dont engage in chat ever altho they talk and laugh it up with each other and others in the department.
if I have to speak to them about something work related I am direct with a very simplified style of interacting. It’s weirdly draining.
I guess my advice op is to say hello once a day and keep all interactions strictly about work. Use email or office email as much as you can

Anywherebuthere · 03/09/2026 19:37

A simple 'morning' in general to whoever is around and then keep it strictly professional with this colleague after that is enough.

IDontHateRainbows · 03/09/2026 19:44

Id be saying morning! MORNING! MOOOORNNING! YOO HOO! Until she just can't ignore you any more.

Point made. walk away.

The good morning song from singing in the rain would be a good one.

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 03/09/2026 20:14

I’d say one last time with a smile, ‘Hello?? Have I done something to upset you? I keep greeting you and you ignore me.” I’m too old to put up with shitty rude people going unchallenged.

Boodahh · 03/09/2026 20:21

Agree with doubling down 'Hey Jane! Good to see you! Lovely day isn't it.'

Banjas · 03/09/2026 20:29

I had this with a colleague. I would always say good morning. She didn’t reciprocate.
At other times she was ok.
i found her odd.
You could have knocked me down with a feather when, after I left the workplace she actually sent me a Christmas card. 😀
