To think I've fucked it - raw chicken

All it is is a measly pasta dish. DH in office tomorrow and wanted DD and me to eat "well" and not something oven-y.

So I used a pair of scissors to chop up raw chicken breast into a pan, all good. Chicken pasta all ready and tasty. I pick up aforementioned scissors to chop fresh herbs over the finished dish and noticed a raw chicken morsel on the scissors and it all came flooding back to me. I used the same scissors for the raw chicken and they sat there waiting to be washed but I forgot and just used them. I've stuck a low flame under the pan in an effort to kill any bacteria/cook???? any potential raw chicken morsels that fell in.

Have I fucked the entire dish? 😫😭 Can it be saved or will I kill my entire family?

YABU - the dish is fine
YANBU - stay away from this meal at all costs

Am I the only one here gobsmacked that a pair of scissors was used to cut chicken? What in the beejeez nutty method is that!

Sharp knife only, then hot washed in dishwasher surely?

Raw chicken on the dish - I’d dump it.

No, I have a pair of kitchen scissors and then straight in the dishwasher.

I always use scissors to cut up raw chicken - it’s much easier, and avoids having raw chicken on chopping boards, which I don’t like.

If you have good knives you’re not supposed to put them in the dishwasher either.

I use a sharpe knife on a chopping board if I want thinner bits of chicken for a stir-fry or similar. But if I am doing a curry or something that suits chunkier bits of chicken, then I use kitchen scissors and cut it over the pan so the chicken falls straight in and no need for a chopping board.

Don't put good knives in the dishwasher

Chicken is so dangerous. Strange that the Government Health Department hasn't banned it completely. I don't know how anyone can eat it, and as for chicken in takeaways, well I bet there are often a few knives re used there, as the food inspectors can't be in every such place 24/7. I'd also say that there's many a household where the same knives/scissors have been used for this dangerous bacteria ridden chicken as other things.

Who would eat it FGS. It's nuclear level dangerous. Stop and the anxiety will disappear! 😊

Can’t tell if joking or not… but there are some proper nutjobs on here so 😬🤷‍♀️

I cant be the only person on this thread who just treats chicken the same as any protein. Wash hands. Cut chicken. If chicken needs further slicing or dicing I do so using the same knife without breaking out the bleach. Boards in dishwasher, knives washed as usual in warm soapy water.

Has something happened with chicken that I dont know about?Confused

The weirdest responses I've read in a long time...

You need to learn how to cook 6/7 meals

Scissors are nutty. Everyone has a dishwasher

Why does your husband dictate what you're eating

Chicken should be banned

.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

You do know you can get food poisoning from vegetables if not washed and cooked properly?

HostaCentral · 03/09/2026 13:48

Considering we all spent years rinsing raw chicken in the sink before cooking it, you'll be fine. Also survived 20 odd years of hand washing chopping boards and utensils etc in a bowl of hot water. Actually can be better than dishwashing, as you actually physically scrub the bacteria away.

I also used scissors to chonk chicken.

ChocolateApples · 03/09/2026 13:54

As long as the dish is heated thoroughly after the chicken is added you are fine. The issue would be chopping fresh herbs over the finished dish and then eating without applying more heat.

Ideally you want that heat applied straight away so the bacteria in the chickeny herbs aren't sitting on warm cooked dish multiplying. But realistically a decent reheat when you actually eat it will do the job.

Yes, but still.....😁

Persephonia1966 · 03/09/2026 14:25

You can use raw chicken scissors to cut herbs with no danger so long as the herbs are then going into a dish that is going to be cooked all the way through. So so long as you reheat the whole dish so it is piping hot throughout then any nasty germs will have been killed. Which it sounds like you are doing.

I wouldn’t eat it. My friend’s son managed to give all of his uni flatmates and himself Salmonella after using the same knife to chop raw chicken and then some salad to go with it. UK Health Protection Agency investigated after two ended up in hospital. All recovered, fortunately. Raw chicken is high risk regardless of UK provenance.
