AIBU to stop replacing my stolen recycling bin and use general waste?

I've just got home from work and my recycling bin has gone missing again. I popped it out this morning before work to be emptied and it's gone. It's the third one I've had to replace this year- it was covered on obnoxious flower stickers and had my number on the lid and side. Can't see it anywhere on the street.

It's £65 to replace it with a new bin, which tbh is money I can't really afford to spend right now.

I'm bloody sick of it getting stolen and having to spend money to replace it.

Wibu to throw my recycling into my general waste bin, apart from cans/glass which I can recycle at work‽

£65! I can't believe your council charge that amount i wouldn't be replacing it either.

yes just use the normal bin.

Holeymoley28 · 02/09/2026 14:13

£36.50 a bin here unless you are on benefits then it’s half price.

I wouldn’t be paying to keep replacing something that’s stolen. Considering it’s the council that own the bins they should replace them when stolen.

Was it definitely stolen and not 'eaten' by the crusher in the lorry? That happens quite a bit in our area, and the bin men never bother to find the householder to inform them - but when you contact the council, they deliver a new one to you and don't charge you. You could quite reasonably 'assume' that this is probably what happened.

Otherwise, I'd call the council and just tell them that it's been stolen - assuming it wasn't their lorry that ate it - and you simply can't afford to buy a replacement; so you regrettably will have no option now but to start putting your recycling in the landfill waste bin if they can't provide you with a replacement for the stolen one.

KarenNextDoor · 02/09/2026 14:17

I would also write them a note to say its unaffordable for you to keep paying £65 for someone to keep stealing it.

yes i agree, stick it all in the general waste bin. Cant say you haven't tried to do the right thing

Timeforachange26 · 02/09/2026 14:35

I wouldn't have even paid it once.

whst kind of recycling? I don’t use my bin for glass/cans as it’s too small, I just put out a clear or white bag. We have WhatsApp for the street and occasionally someone asks if a bin has shown up at the wrong house. But our council doesn’t charge for replacements (though I guess they might after three)!

Pansykavalier · 02/09/2026 14:41

This is ridiculous.

Call the council and make a fuss.

Cardboard and the odd plastic milk bottle mostly. Glass and cans I can recycle at work.

They won't take anything that's not in a bin. (They sometimes won't even empty a bin of the lid isn't closed fully!)

Deffo been stolen again unfortunately... One of my neighbours takes them, fills them with crap and then sets them on fire. 🙃🙃🙃

They do what! My god. Phone the council tell them you are not paying for a replacement bin but you would like one because of batshit neighbour. If they don't replace it just black bag your rubbish and put it in the general waste.
