AIBU to struggle with what to wear in-between seasons?

I’m okay in summer and winter but this in between time I really struggle. And if it’s wet out, it’s even harder!

Would you still wear dresses in this weather but with boots? Or trainers? I only own converse as I don’t really wear trainers. I have brogues but I think they look better with tights.

I’m plus size so I don’t like jeans on me much or trousers. But I will wear them occasionally. I used to live in leggings but I don’t want to do that anymore.

I love tights, dresses and boots in the late autumn and winter and I love dresses, skirts and sandals in the summer.

Yes! I hate dressing at this time of year. I’m always too hot or too cold.

I find clothes are a good choice.
I usually base my decision on looking out of the window, looking at a weather forecast or what I am intending to do. Funnily enough this works 99% of the time.
At the moment, given where I am based, fitflops on the feet, fairly light trousers, a linen shirt and the option of a light gilet are a good combination.
Socks and shoes optional, underwear does not vary much, but changes to long-sleeved silk thermal vests under a cashmere jersey from November to March/April.

I'm still wearing linen wide leg trousers, but with long sleeved tops instead of tees, and occasionally with a fine knit sweater or jacket on top.

My jeans, cords and tights won't be out until it turns cold. It's still in the twenties in SE UK.

I struggle on any days that need more than shorts and less than jeans! I'm going to Brussels this weekend, the forecast looks nice but not hot. No idea what to wear when giing with comfy shoes is the main priority.

I actually like this time of year as I feel I have more flexibility. I do wear trousers a lot though so that helps as I totally get the issue with shorts or dresses between seasons. But I like that I dont have to dress exclusively for the weather. This summer I felt like I had tonight wear shorts or dresses with no options to add an interesting scarf or jacket or whatever. Andnin the depth of winter its just abojt warmth for me.

Re skirts/dresses, i dont wear them a lot this time of year. Sometimes long shorts, bare legged bit with boots or trainers. But agree - too warm for tights and too cold for complwtely bare legs. Sorry, probably not that helpful.

It’s shoes and coats that I find a pain - it’s warm but wet where I am so my feet get too hot in trainers but I don’t want to splash through puddles in my sandals/flip flops. Likewise coats, you need a jacket of some kind preferably waterproof but most make you feel sweaty and horrible!

PurplebudsWhitebuds · 02/09/2026 08:17

Surely you look at the weather forcast, think about what you are going to be doing that day, and decide what is appropriate?

Meadowfinch · 02/09/2026 08:30

I've just switched from shorts & tshirts or dresses & sandals to capri pants and long sleeved tshirts with ballet flats.

As it gets colder I'll move to cords and blouses/cotton sweaters or long sleeved dresses with cotton tights & ankle boots.

I struggle most with very cold weather. I'm fine yomping up lanes in jeans, thick sweaters, boots and a waterproof, but can never find cold weather tidy. A dress with a thermal tshirt underneath is about the best I manage. Winter chic is not something I'm good at.

Doggymummar · 02/09/2026 08:32

This is my favourite time of the year and I have plenty of options. I love getting the snuggly jumpers out. Yesterday was a jeans and boots day today it's raining but still warm so jeans and flipflops with a Mac if I go out. I don't work in an office tho so I guess that's harder

Screamingabdabz · 02/09/2026 08:41

I know what you mean op even if some people are being sarcastic.

For me it’s the legs - I’m a dress wearer usually but by this end of the summer my legs are pasty white again and sandals look wrong. But tights and boots are too much. I’ve moved to leggings and jeans with Birkenstock clogs.

It’s usually cold in the morning but quite warm by late afternoon. Layering is answer, I guess this is where cardigans come into their own. And all those crop trench jackets and blouson jackets that are very fashionable right now.

ProfessorofDarkArts · 03/09/2026 07:11

I literally had this problem last night - walked to see a friend and it was gloomy and a bit drizzly so I put on trainers and a light jacket. If I’d worn eg Birkenstocks and a t-shirt I’d have got wet but instead I was dry but boiling by the time I arrived 🤦🏻‍♀️

Namechange26andabit · 03/09/2026 08:48

Even worse when going away for a few days so have to pack. Too hot, too cold, too much room in case??

HoldMyWine · 03/09/2026 08:51

I agree OP ( not sure why some posters need to be so snarky).
I end up being too hot or too cold.
I am wearing a midi dress with loafers but bare legs.
Need to go out so will wear my raincoat which doesn’t match at all, and makes he hot and sweaty.

CoffeeandCakeBreak · 03/09/2026 09:04

It is awkward at this time of year. I am in midi dresses now and will wear them with Mary Janes. Indeed I just ordered about 5 pairs of Mary Janes in different colours and some Boston clogs last night to try on at home, as I don't want to wear my Birkenstock sandals.

I don't wear jeans or trousers either. I do wear leggings though, I have cropped leggings and full length as they aren't too warm and I can wear with vests, t shirts, long sleeved tops or jumpers in the winter so they are flexible all year round
