AIBU to think waxing is a such a palaver

First you have to find an appointment that works for you, travel there, spend on average an hour getting waxed which can be painful, pay quite a bit for the pleasure, come back home and not wash for 24 hours or wash without any soap at a push, the advice is to also wash all your bedding and towels to minimise irritation, inevitably get irritation, at the very least red pinprick rash, start having new hairs growing out within a few days so it’s no longer hair free, live with increasing amount of hair appearing day by day until there’s enough hair to need another appointment/justify the spend so you aren’t plucking out a few hairs for ££, oh and the endless scrubbing and the inevitable ingrowns despite the endless scrubbing and moisturising…

I feel exhausted having just written it down. AIBU?

I'm a weirdo I think because I quite enjoy the waxing, but I've been doing it so long now maybe that's why.

I think the trend (for women) to look pre-pubescent that has gone on for at least two decades is worrying.

It's become entirely normalised though, to the extent that a lot of women feel weird without doing it, thanks to socialisation - much like shaving legs or armpits, women will say they find it more comfortable, or cleaner, finding reasons to justify it that aren't that they just feel better fitting into social norms.

So it's pretty well impossible to try to point out that it's a mostly porn-driven, rather problematic trend in our modern, western society. (Although obviously individuals should feel happy to groom themselves how they like - we all partake in some amount of personal grooming beyond cleanliness).

Waxing is painful, yes. But i don't know what all these silly rules are about not having a shower or changing sheets are. Never heard of them, never done them and it has not impacted on hair growth in any way.

No rash, no irritation, no ingrown hairs, no changing of bed sheets. Find someone else to do it.

This has such a cost - in terms of money, but also time, and it’s painful. How are we at a point where women feel this is compulsory and men don’t give it a second thought?

Trimmer. Quickly cuts hairs to a soft neat length. I consider waxing to be an unnecessary cost, time and pain requirement for ‘grooming’.

I had my pubes done once. I had such awful ingrown hairs afterwards that I've still got scars from it. Never again!

Apart from the fact that it is painful, where do you find the time? And £20 a month is £240 a year, over 40 years that's £10,000 wasted.

I'd rather have six weeks on a Greek island. Or pay off my mortgage a whole year early.

Because I’ve been waxing for at least 15 years now and it takes about 30 minutes including travel time. Same for most of my friendship group. The sheets thing is insane.

What is judgemental about finding it worrying and ridiculous that it's become normalised for women to have no pubic hair?

Apart from the occasional armpit shave I gave up on hair removal about 9 years ago. Life is better for it.

No one is judging women who get bikini waxes in a negative way. But I don't see what's wrong with talking about how unappealing it seems to have done to you, or why it's bad to discuss the underlying social views that might be behind this very entrenched trend.

That is not my experience at all. My wax lady is particularly good though, she was off sick for a year and I tried other places and no one compared

Do you say that about bald men? Men who close shave their head? Are they pre pubescent too?
Can't you just accept that some people prefer how it feels. In my friendship group (in our 50s) I'm in the minority in that I prefer a wax. I've never watched a porn film in my life and believe me my 50odd year old body couldn't look prepubescent if it tried. I just prefer how it feels
