AIBU to refuse my mother-in-law keeping my daughter's first tooth?

DD just turned 7 has a wobbly tooth. Her first one.
My smother in law said that she was going to pull it out for her when she next saw her AND she was going to keep it in her little box where she has all her 3 children's milk teeth.

AIBU to say no she isn't? I feel that the tooth shouldn't be pulled and will fall out when it's good and ready. Also I'd quite like to keep my own child's tooth as a keepsake (a lot of mums do that, right?

AIBU and being precious or is MiL overstepping?

I was a bit concerned that she was late losing her milk teeth and consulted with the dentist. Aparrently her adult teeth need more space to come through and they discussed her possibly wearing an aparatus/ brace to widen her mouth a bit. Hopefully with this one being wobbly, it'll fall out and she won't need any intervention.

I do think teeth are gross tbh but having seen those little tinket boxes to store them, I thought keeping them was common. I'm not a psycho, I promise!

Who the hell are the 5% who think you are BU?! Of course you can't let your MIL pull your daughter's tooth out. And it's not hers to keep.

I did keep my kids' first few teeth until I had a moment of clarity and wondered what on earth I was planning on doing with them (I am pleased to report I never once considered keeping them to give my children as a gift when they grew up!). But if you want it as a keep sake than that is your right, OP.

Never would think of keeping them, so I'd be happy with her having it if it matters to her (not pulling it out though). But if you want it, that's up to you.
I have no idea what happened to my teeth. I'd find it really weird if my parents kept them and presented me with them, but to each their own.

I swallowed mine and howled the place down as I wouldn't get the shiny sixpence from the tooth fairy.

DH has just reminded me I’ve kept our DSs’ baby teeth. Not thought about them for years but I know where they are!

Keeping them was definitely a thing - you could get christening gifts of a tooth box.

I've kept all my child's teeth and as a kid I kept all my cat's kitten teeth, plus any stay whiskers I found. I used to think maybe I'd have her cloned one day. The cat not the child. As I'm writing this I'm starting to see it does give off nutter vibes.

DP keeps the shed (shedded?) skin from our pets. It makes him happy.

No current interest in being a serial killer. I don’t have the time and I’m not fit enough to dig holes.

If mine had tried this on she would have regretted it. No one should pull a child’s teeth out when it’s going to drop out naturally - only a dentist should take a tooth out!

And to claim it as hers - well, I posted on another thread that if MIL had taken my DC behind my back to get their first shoes and had the photo taken etc, I would have binned the certificate, put the shoes away as spares, and taken my DS myself the following weekend. Some called that insane - I call it setting down a boundary.

I have one of those small jewellery bags of my daughter’s teeth, quite disgusting actually. No idea why I’ve kept them.

This is something my MIL would want to do and it makes me angry just thinking about it! I’ve never heard of anyone pulling someone’s tooth out…that’s weird! And how dare she just assume she can keep it! She wanted to keep her own children’s teeth, so surely she’d realise this is something you would want to keep. Hugely overstepping.

They do last, I have my 16yr olds baby teeth and they are in perfect condition. Teeth can remain intact for 1000s of years.

I think it’s much more common than it appears on here. Most of my friends that I know of have kept at least their kids’ first baby tooth. My mum still has mine and I’m fairy certain she’s not planning to murder me! It’s normal to keep your child’s first teeth and locks of their hair, and do things like watch them sleep or stare a photos of them for ages. All of which would of course be creepy as hell if you were doing them to anyone other than your child! I’ve even kept my first-born’s bit of dead umbilical cord that gets clipped at birth and falls off after a few days. I’ve definitely been told I’m gross for that one!

I can’t imagine your dc will want their teeth! Tbh, I find the whole notion of keeping teeth a bit strange but even stranger to hand them over to the child as an adult. Each to their own obviously though.

That said, dh did save the dc’s teeth. No idea where they are but I know he never offered them to them.

I still have my daughter's and she's in her 40s. I don't really know what to do with them now tbh.

No they don't. My DD is mid 40s and her baby teeth are still fine in their silver box.

I still have her hospital bracelet and some hair from her first hair cut.

You are obviously saving their teeth, to give them back as a gift?! I have questions.

1. Why is it obvious that you would keep bits of your child's body? Do you think we should all be doing this? Or that we just do, obviously?
2. Do you also keep all their hair and nail clippings then?
3. Do you think a gift of teeth is...ok?
