To feel like the only person who doesn't speed

Most people around me, colleagues, friends etc. Even some relatives will do 25-30 in a 20, over 35 in 30s and so on. They just learn where the cameras are, and most days I get tailgated on 20 mph streets, I just let them pass where I can as I can't be bothered with someone right behind me.

I don't go over the limit, don't have cruise control or anything as it's an older car but if i accidentally creep up to 1/2mph over I go right back down. I just think that it only takes someone running out into the road, a child or someone and if you're doing 25 and hit them, there's not going to be an excuse for that.

I agree 20 can feel very slow, but I just think it could take 1 time, and i don't think it's wise to just rely on where cameras are.

YANBU. I think speeding shows a lack of respect for residents along the road as well as wildlife. It barely has an impact on arrival time, either, so people are risking lives for nothing.

Who says that electric bikes are free to speed with no consequences? The Met police have just bought a fleet of liveried electric bikes for this purpose ( and street robberies etc). You can see their bodyworn footage on their social media pages. ( I recommend their Tik Tok account by the way… very funny ). Besides one group of people behaving badly doesn’t justify another group doing it.

I teach speed awareness courses so I have plenty of skin in the game. People tend to overestimate their own abilities as drivers but speed is a significant factor in road deaths in the U.K. On average 1800 die every year road traffic accidents. . If you drive 10 miles per hour over the speed limit ( ie 80 rather than 70) you only cover a mile 6 seconds faster so “ getting their faster “ only really works if you travel uninterrupted for miles. But I’m not looking short of work anytime soon.

People also have a split personality about speeding… they don’t like other people speeding in their neighbourhood but feel ok to do it once they get behind the wheel.

I'm usually a stickler but messed up yesterday (let the drivers behind me drive my car - speed limit signs after a local festival that hadn't been removed yet and nobody obeying them, I felt sooo vulnerable going the correct speed so joined everyone else). Now awaiting my first fine/ban and hating my intrusive thoughts. At least I have learned my lesson!

I work for the Magistrates' Court and the most common cases I see are driving offences. Speeders are the worst defendants to deal with in general. They seem to think that they shouldn't be prosecuted as it's not a "real" law, or that they're entitled to speed because of x y z reason. Honestly it's nuts 🙄
