AIBU to think Amanda Abbington has had a rough time?

Do you think Amanda Abington has had a rough ride since all this Giovanni stuff? The names she's been called on social media, replies to news articles surprisingly more than the Mail, are totally off the scale. I've never seen insults so bad.

It's he said she said I know, but she's been told to shut her lying gob, told she's a stirring witch, evil, a woman scorned because she tried it on and he didn't reciprocate.

Don’t read such rubbish and hopefully she doesn’t. It’s clear she didn’t like her dance partner but had accepted the role immediately after her marriage (or long term partnership) broke up and she was fragile. I think she saw Strictly as a diversion from real life. Big mistake I’m afraid. But it’s about time people came off social media!

Hard to know op but I remember Zara McD partner was quite nasty to her too so I do have sympathy for her.

I've not seen anything about her, but I'm not on sm (just this site). I think the BBC ruled in favour of her on a couple of counts, but not all. I think when they looked at the WhatsApp, both had sent messages of a similar tone. I was sorry that she pulled out and clearly struggled. I think there's not much you can do about online trolls, sadly

Who? I recognise none of the names mentioned here, are they famous and if so why?

He lost his job on Strictly, also that travel show.

1. He was found guilty of some of the accusations.
2. The BBC had to pay compensation to Abbington.
3. Other strictly celebs, came out in support of Abbington and said he was inappropriate woth them too.
4. Most (maybe all?) of the UK strictly cast don't engage with him on social media.

So you would absolutely think that people would accept that the accusations are indeed true. But there are plenty of people out there who can't see beyond his looks and love to bring down successful women so still blame Abbington.

I'm guessing he's not the brightest but I'm astounded that his management have not advised him to be vaguely apologetic or to at least show a bit of sympathy. If only he'd accepted he was wrong and committed to being better, he might not have to squirm so much when he's being interviewed. He made a fool of himself on daytime TV today, his body language tells you all you need to know. He should be ashamed of himself as should any woman (or man!) who supports him.

He now did a come back and is I think saying some very unpleasant things about her, and a lot of comments along the lines of "she is unpleasant/horrible to work with/lazy" and much much worse etc are surfacing. The comments are not by him obviously but pseudo fans and anyone else trying to jump on the bandwagon. BBC seems to have failed everyone in this situation.

There is an interesting aspect to me, that while his conduct was horrific, that many people in his field are trained using these methods. To mentor someone, you also need suitable preparation- and in many fields people specialise to mentor and teach others. For this reason newly qualified teachers dont immediately train newer teachers and this role is given to experienced people. Im sure in most fields it works the same- Id not expect to drop someone with zero experience of mentoring and let them do whatever without supervision.
Someone should have stepped in there (I mean there are cameras in that room throughout the training? No one had eyes?) and intervene. To leave them to carry on was a failure to both Amanda and Giovanni.

My understanding is that there wasn't always cameras or people present at that time but the BBC have now changed their rules to make sure there is always someone in the room.

I think you're right that teaching methods have been quite brutal in the past. That's why I think both Pernice and his management have been stupid. Why didn't they just acknowledge that at times he may have gone too far, that this was 'normal' in his industry, that he'd learned from it and that it wouldn't happen again. That's his biggest mistake, not learning anything from it. Even if he isn't actually sorry, why didn't he say sorry to save his career? His arrogance and stupidity has cost him.
