To have a nap with my 8 year old in the house?

Well behaved, sensible child sat watching television/reading/doing puzzles etc.

Why would that in any way be unreasonable? Has someone told you it is?

I'd probably be a bit judgy if it was like a 3 hour nap every day, but I assume it's not!

moppety · 01/09/2026 15:44

Why would that be unreasonable?

shellyleppard · 01/09/2026 15:45

I used to sleep on the sofa while my sons watched TV/built Lego or train track when they were young

GreyCarpet · 01/09/2026 15:46

Of course it's not unreasonable.

ETA: I voted YABU but that's for asking not napping 😉

AgnesMcDoo · 01/09/2026 15:46

Of course it’s fine

Boomer55 · 01/09/2026 15:47

It’s not unreasonable, but may be unrealistic.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 01/09/2026 15:48

I wouldn't even think twice about it! No child at 8 needs an adult hovering over them all day.

Hagnumber4 · 01/09/2026 15:49

I've just gone through a period of ill health and often have to have an hour or two nap just to function. Mine are 8 and 9

emuloc · 01/09/2026 15:50

Why do you ask OP?

moppety · 01/09/2026 15:50

DD1 is 7 and if she wakes up before us she just does her own thing unless she needs us, she listens to her Yoto cards, does some drawing or reading, watches TV, does some air clay, loon bands, whatever. I’ve had the occasional nap with her home too and she just amuses herself. The joy of children getting older surely!

The best bit is that my 4yo is starting to do the same and they actually amuse each other in the mornings!

ThatLilacTiger · 01/09/2026 16:12

It's fine as long as they're sensible and you've childproofed to a reasonable degree (candles and big knives and that).

arethereanyleftatall · 01/09/2026 16:34

This quite a strange post op, why couldn’t you? For examples - in the mornings, do you always wake first? Because if they sometimes wake up first, that’s the same situation as now. Just tell them to wake you if they need you.

wiredandtired · 01/09/2026 16:35

I'm sure an 8 year old can wake you if they need you.

One of life’s greatest pleasures as a parent.

MonsterasEverywhere · 01/09/2026 17:06

It depends entirely on how long the nap is and whether you've talked to your child about things like not opening the front door to people, don't use things in the kitchen on your own, etc and that they know they can come and wake you if they need to.

AbsintheMakesTheHeartGrowFonder · 01/09/2026 18:03

Why wouldn't it be all right? What do you think an eight-year-old is going to do while you're asleep that might be a problem? Presumably at that age your child is already aware not to pop out to the shed and drink a gallon of weedkiller, or decide they're going to teach themselves to juggle with carving knives.

Also, unless by 'nap' you mean a coma, your child is going to be capable of waking you up if they need you.

comeoncolleen · 01/09/2026 18:19

Presumably you sleep at night when she's in the house. She would wake you if there's a problem.
