Sad we all have to go back to real life

Dh has been lucky this summer and had just over three weeks off (normally has two) I'm fortunate to be off over summer and obviously Dc off school.
Woken up to a quiet house, Dh already gone to work, Dc a bit quiet and just watching tv. We will all be back to work and school by the end of the week.
It hasn't all been perfect, but I've enjoyed the lazy mornings, us all having breakfast in the garden, making plans for the day to do what we like.
Life is so short to spend in the rushed, stressy way we sometimes live, only seeing each other for snatches of time.

I know i'm being totally unrealistic and it's life.
But it's rubbish and I wish we could all spend more time together

Your question reminds me of the joke / parable of the fisherman and the businessman.

Love this, worth really thinking about x

YANBU on two fronts.

One, the exhausting school run / school routine. Day in, day out. I’m out of that now, but I was thinking about it just yesterday. It’s like living your life in chunks of term time. Two, the general rush of life. As the government, schools, and businesses shift responsibility for everything from them onto individual households, there is a never ending list of ‘things’ that needs to be done. Again, every single day.

Summer feels like the only 5/6 weeks out of the year where life slows down. By the end of the week, the rush hour traffic will be back to its usual peak.
We’re not meant to live like this.

We really aren't-feels so unbalanced and such a waste. Life goes só quickly

This will probably make me very unpopular, but I can’t wait to be on my own for 6 hours a day again when eveyone is at school and work, doing as I please!

(Don’t be jealous, I have a couple of horrendous health issues which take up a lot of time with appointments and fighting the NHS for a shred of dignity and cause horrible anxiety and depression as a result. I am also too skint to do anything other than walk the dog).

I'm with 100%. When I was 30 I left my high pressure job and retrained to do something I love- from then on I worked freelance from home , it has it's problems but my OH worked 7-3 (civil servant) so we had lots of time together, we don't have kids though which makes a shift easier. My OH retired early and I still work PT so we have managed a good balance- it's super tough working all hours god sends, both on yourselves and your relationship.

I will be relieved when we all go back.

Not a feral brat like the youth of today and the parents aren’t any better

Going by your rudeness I am not sure you were brought up well.

The irony!

The irony!

It must depend on the area, the DC around here aren’t feral.

i work term time and my husband wfh and is v flexible, so it’s been us with the kids for 6 weeks and it’s been so lovely. My youngest is starting reception this week and my eldest is starting year 1. We’ve been away a few times and had some lovely days out and met up with friends. I wish life could always be like this.

Could you make normal life not so rushed and stressy? It really doesn’t have to be that way.

Dh and I are both mostly around before and after school, though sometimes one or both of us does have to do some work. We’re always both home for a family dinner every night. We spend time together every day, even if some of that involves a lot of taxiing. We’ve built careers with a high level of flexibility that means we can always prioritise family.

It might not happen overnight, but what can you change to make normal life more something you don’t want to escape from in the holidays?

Edited

Depends on jobs thought doesn’t it? It’s great you and your DH are mostly around, but not everyone can manage this. My DH is often out between 6-7am (sometimes earlier) and back after 5:30 (on a good day!). I have to be out by 7:45 at the latest and back around 5/5:30 by which point I have to start cooking dinner/put a wash on/shower etc and then taxiing to DCs sport a few evenings.

Not everyone is able to build a career with a high level of flexibility, whilst that’s great for you it’s not as simple as telling someone ‘it doesn’t have to be this way’.

I like the person I am over the summer, I am a teacher and I’m very grateful for the (unpaid) holidays. I enjoy my job, but I don’t enjoy the version of life term time brings. I’m all ears though for ways to make it better when both of us are out of the house most of the day!

OP - I am completely with you.
