the earth rotation is slowing....

days are drifting longer and longer, until they're 30 then 34 then 40 ets hours long.

would you live your life by the 24 hour clock and accept dark and light comes bad goes randomly or try to live by the sun up, day, sun down, night?

bearing in mind at some point daylight will last 24 odd hours, similarly night too.

DH think real time - sun up, sun down

aibu to think the only sanity is 24 hours makes a day, get some black out curtains for the light nights?

This really isn’t something you’re going to live long enough to worry about 😂😂

This already happens in some parts of the world. Maybe visit there if you want to try it out?

Firstly, workplaces already expect you to be contactable 24/7, so no change except for how you phrase it. 40/10?
Then gravity probably wouldn’t work if that happened so we’d have all floated off or evolved into heavier creatures. Actually, wait…. That may just be happening anyway.

Entropy, baby.

Sun up, sun down. If humans are still around by the time it makes a big difference to awake/asleep patterns they will have adapted to cope.

Isn't the moon drifting away??

I’m sure that would slow it further….🤣

There was a research study where a woman spent 3 months living in a cave with no external light or clocks. She had an electric light and cooking things and books and could make her own schedule. I think she settled into days of about 25 hours. So in normal life we are all rushed to fit things into just 24 hours.

Years ago l read a book with this plot line, l just had to Google it was called 'the age of miricales' as far as l recall it didnt end well, I might re read

no, there day might lasts for months at a time, not 25 hours of one then the other then 24.5 hours of one and 25 hours of the other. and it's pretty hard to grow much there and hardly anyone lives there and my kids will moan of I make them emigrate.

The Moon is slowly moving away from Earth at a rate of about 3.8 centimetres (1.5 inches) per year

if that's fascinating, I wonder what my natural circadian rhythm would be without obligation and sunrise?

I think @maximistis going to solve that with glue

I already live outside of the standard 24 hour cycle, so I probably wouldn't start trying to follow the daylight and stick to what suits my body best.

I spent years with insomnia and depression, lying awake every night stressing out that I couldn't sleep and spending every day exhausted. I finally started to listen to my body and now only go to bed when I feel tired and stay there until I feel rested. I've been mentally well and more able to cope with my other health issues since doing this and I don't plan on stopping.

Some days I'm only awake 6-8 hours before I need to sleep again, sometimes I'm awake as long as 30 hours. On average I sleep about 9 or 10 hours but sometimes it's as long as 14. A normal calendar month is usually around 24 "days" for me but it can swing a couple either side.

I'm not sure you understand how gravity works....

And lots of people live in areas where daylight or night lasts weeks as it is....

gravity is making stuff heavier

How so ?

Gravity is a function of mass and distance.

F = G(m1m2)/R2

What would happen in your scenario is that weights would change. Because of a combination of the equatorial bulge, and the effects of centripetal acceleration. The weight difference at the poles V the Equator is something like 0.5 %. A slower rotating earth would reduce this difference, because the equatorial centripetal component would reduce.

The Equatorial bulge might be an issue though. It's not very big. Only about 40 km difference between the diameter around the equator and through the poles. But slowing the rotation of the earth would reduce the centripetal forces, and this slight bulge would reduce. So there would likely be a lot of earthquakes. I think the sea level would change too. Reduce around the equator and increase towards the polls.

It would also be a lot hotter/ colder all over. Because the sun hits the earth with about 100 watts of energy per square meter, perpendicular to the sun. So if a day increased in length by 50%, so would the amount of suns energy hitting it increase by 50%. And the side in shadow would have 50% more cooling time to radiate heat out to the universe. So really hot days and really cold nights would result. And that would really mess up the railways, among other things.

But if you are a flat earther, none of the above matters. Because their earth model takes none of this into account And no, I am not a flerth. But I have argued/ debated loads of them.
