Was I unreasonable to sit close to a friends boyfriend as there was lack of chairs to sit on?

I was at my friend Ivan’s house with his girlfriend Tina and another 2 friends.
There were 2 small 2 seater sofas and so I sat on the floor in front of the sofa Ivan and our friend Jim were sitting on.
I sat more in front of Ivan than Jim but it was so I was facing the other sofa to talk our other friends and see the tv and there was more room that way because of how furniture was arranged.

We were having fish and chips from the chippy, everyone was eating but Tina was sorting hers in the kitchen when we sat down.
When she came back from the kitchen and saw where I was sitting she started ranting saying I was sitting between Ivan’s legs and leaning on him (I wasn’t) and telling me to move.

Our friend Martian said Tina was being paranoid and she got more wound up but Ivan was just calmly eating his fish and shaking his head.
This made Tina even angrier and she said “you just stuff your face and don’t say anything you piggy man” and was making pig snorting noises.
Ivan told her she was being embarrassing but she said “you don’t care about me, you are just a fat greedy warthog more bothered about gulping that down then anything else” then she told me to leave and said I was as bad as him and threw some of her chips at me!

Martin tried to calm her down but I left and told Tina to grow up, it was a ridiculous overreaction to a non event.

No one had been drinking and I’ve name changed for this.
I’m upset as we’ve all been friends for over 20 years and Tina should trust me, was I wrong to sit in front of her boyfriend? (even though it wasn’t touching him and I was sat in front of Jim as well.)
I’ve never seen her behave anything like that before and she was sobbing as well was shouting so she was upset as well as angry.
We are in our late 30’s not young so it was bizarre behaviour from an adult.

Would I BU to just ignore her until I get an apology or should I apologise and check she’s ok and find out why she lost the plot and reassure her nothing is going on between me and Ivan?
There must be more to it and his reaction seemed like he’d had enough.

I know this sounds like made up nonsense and I really wasn’t sure about posting because I would struggle to believe it if I read it but this is a genuine post and I’ve been a regular contributor on this site for years and wouldn’t waste peoples time by making troll posts.

She sounds insane. She called him a piggy man and a warthog, then threw chips at you?! How long have they been together, do you know her well, what is she usually like? Has Ivan ever cheated on her?

MyArtfulGreySloth · 31/08/2026 18:12

She has issues 😳

TFImBackIn · 31/08/2026 18:12

What have I just read?!

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 31/08/2026 18:13

Maybe she had a few drinks in the kitchen as she sounds off her face.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 31/08/2026 18:14

Vicky pollard going round in my head.

DelphiniumBlue · 31/08/2026 18:15

Why was Ivan sitting on the sofa while guests didn't have a seat? I think he probably is a piggy man and this was probably the last straw for Tina. On that basis, and as you have suggested it and she is a long term friend, maybe give her a call to see if she is OK. There's probably more going on.

LizandDerekGoals · 31/08/2026 18:15

Well, that’s a lot. She is clearly raging with him about something. But also, did anyone speak up for you?

ShitFacedShakespeare · 31/08/2026 18:16

Well you’re right about the last bit anyway.

My thoughts too.

Plra · 31/08/2026 18:18

I’d do nothing and say nothing.

Mrstawnyowl · 31/08/2026 18:21

Why was anyone sitting on the floor? It sounds as if there were 4 people and 4 available seats.

Pinkgin00 · 31/08/2026 18:21

WTF, she threw chips at you? 🙈 Something else must be going on in their relationship, this is not normal behaviour. I would be waiting for an apology from her.

Assuming OP left a seat for Tina to sit down?

AbacusCat · 31/08/2026 18:25

That isn't normal behaviour from a friend of 20 years.. Give Tina time to calm down then check in with her - there might be something going on, nothing to do with this incident, that's upsetting or worrying her.

I think I miscounted the people.

vincettenoir · 31/08/2026 18:27

You need new pals. Not the primary issue here but as it was Ivan’s house he should have been the one to sit on the floor rather than you.

TheBusyMoose · 31/08/2026 18:29

I find all the concern for her interesting. If a man called a woman Piggy woman and a warthog in front of friends it would be really concerning.

I would want to make sure Ivan is okay as well

UnbeatenMum · 31/08/2026 18:31

Was she on something?

What have I just read?!

Do you normally have comprehension problems?

Gardenisablooming · 31/08/2026 18:32

Is this a stealth boast ? Fish and chips aren't cheap and should be eaten not flung about..
As far as your mate is concerned she is battier than the fish..

Shoutinglagerlagerlager · 31/08/2026 18:34

Blimey! She sounds abusive, insecure and controlling. But can't believe this behaviour from someone in their 30s.

Can your friendship survive this OP?

OuijaBoard · 31/08/2026 18:39

I don't think it was unreasonable for you to have sat on the floor in front of Ivan and Jim when there were no more available chairs. If you were too close or in Ivan's way somehow, I'm sure he would have found a way to tell you. I wouldn't apologise because all you can reasonably do is a "sorry you were so upset" non-apology and that probably won't help. Do you normally see this group regularly? Can you just wait until the next time you see Tina in person and see if she brings it up? If it's out of character and/or she was drunk she may just want to forget all about it.

BlueandtheGodofMischief · 31/08/2026 18:39

I'd wait for Tina to come to you or you might get another barrage of abuse.

SconehengeRevenge · 31/08/2026 18:40

I can't believe you're all in your 30s.
Tina sounds like a teenager.

If i was Ivan, I'd dump her

TooOrangey · 31/08/2026 18:40

What a load of old crap.
