Is anyone else noticing a lot of self proclaimed coaches who are very prolific on social media are a bit bonkers ?
For example - and this is going to sound bitchy and unsupportive but Christ I can’t believe they’re taking people’s hard earned cash for this, it all feels quite immoral?
1 - ex collegue. Quit her well paying job, now is a ‘life change’ type coach encouraging others to quit their jobs and be the CEO of their own life. She also often films herself crying into the camera . Also posting about needing a lodger etc for extra cash.

Another one (not a friend) who does seem to have some qualifications - for a while had a niche helping people wean off WLI’s. Went back on them herself after 6 months when she started regaining weight.

They don’t sound like coaches for anything. Just just some not very bright people attempting to make some money out of not doing anything much. Stop following them.

I agree. Fine if people want to give advice about stuff - assuming they know what they are talking about. But giving up your JOB to become a 'Life Coach' is batshit.

I know a young woman who is a content creator, and she has around 100,000 subscribers, and makes around £65K to £80K a year from it, (and the promotions and advertising and sponsorship etc....)

She could give up her job as she earns well from 'the internet.' But her job is quite niche and well paid (£60K a year,) and she's only in her late 20s. She has flexi time, a good pension, a good healthcare scheme, and a good holiday allowance, so she would be mad to give it up, as the 'internet work' could dry up/stop overnight.

She has dropped to 28 hours a week though - in her actual normal job/career. Still on £47K a year. (Plus all the money from her internet work...)

I have clocked a few obviously and I always think… I bet you scrape a few thousand a year at most

An ex friend on my husband is dating one, all seems to be a load of buzz words and stating the bleeding obvious. Her whole speil is ‘if you want to change your life, change your life’ , yeah thanks for that. Another one of her pearls of wisdom is’ I used to be so anxious and worried about what people thought of me so I just decided one day not to be anxious and not care about what people thought of me’. Brilliant, why didn’t I think of that. It all seems to give off MLM boss babe vibes 🙄

Oh yeah I have someone on my social media who is now a "leadership coach" she was a charge nurse in the NHS and was so terrible they asked her to leave. Her life is also quite chaotic so people would be crazy to take advise from her. She post videos of her talking and sounding clever but it's just nonsense

All of these people can only earn money if people are daft enough to fund them.

I knew someone who seemed to be a coach but I still can't tell what she actually does, or who her target audience is ...

To be fair though, there are some people out there in the world who need to be spoonfed what to do. Being told to 'change your life' by someone who portrays themself as an expert and paying them for the privilege is going to count for more than their best friend telling them for free.

It's the same people who write self help/professional development/how to be a manager...they are basically all the same and if I wasn't so lazy I'd write one. The format is
I am going to tell you how to be a manager and how to get the most out of your time and your staff (15 pages)
Here's why you need it ... Made up story about bob who is an idiot and god knows how he got a management job (20 pages)
Step one. Set your goals . Blah blah blah about not achieving anything without goals to work to and how to get them (30 pages...but no manager sets their own goals and targets)
Step 2 . Recruit good staff (15pages...no shit but never tells you how to do it or accepts that it often doesn't work that way
Step 3 encourage your staff (20 pages...no shit Sherlock)
Step 4 manage your time by using to do lists and a diary (20 pages... again no shit)
Step 5 measure your achievements (20 pages)
Step 6 you've successfully done it (20 pages)

So that's 160 pages, to pad it out at the end of each step you repeat over 2 pages what you've just said AND tell them what you are going to say next again over 2 pages. So that's an extra 10 pages

Then you have some meaningless examples.... like the one I read by the ex CEO of SAS airlines how he authorised a member of staff to go to a customers house to pick up the passport he'd forgotten...yeh like my boss would be happy to do that.

So you have 200+ pages that state the obvious... anyone who's not as lazy as me, your welcome

I have two friends who do this (they are lovely people and good friends), but I would not be taking career /life advice from them because they are the classic: “those who can’t, teach (in this instance, coach).”

I feel terrible just saying it, they are friends…

Similar here, NHS, but she was in admin instead of a charge nurse.

Except that she was doing her coaching as a side hustle... during office hours!

She got found out by management and was given the boot, and if you work in the NHS you know how hard it is usually to fire someone.
