AIBU to think people forget about when the sun rises and sets

The times when the sun rises and sets - the times when this happens remains the same. Today 30 Aug - Sun rises at 6:10 am and sets 8pm. These times are the same as other Aug 30.

I know what time it goes dark as in a previous job where I finished at 8pm, it was starting to get dark Aug 22 my DM’s birthday.

Do people actually forget about this?

All I know is my days of driving to/from work (18 miles) are numbered.

Days are shorter by a quarter of a hour per week.

It seemed particularly dark yesterday morning because there were very dark clouds after the recent clear skies. It got to twilight and just seemed to stick there.

Yes we know it happens every year but for some its a bit of a conversation starter. Also as human beings we must be biologically programmed to be aware of the change of seasons. Store food for winter. Sow seed, gather harvest and so on. So rather than think everyone is dumber than you because they dont seem to remember this has happened before try to marvel in the natural world and our place in it. And no Im not a druid but I do have an allotment!

Towards the end of August there is more of an acceleration of the day length shortening day to day compared to June and July so we are actually losing daylight more quickly compared to previous months.

this week the days are successfully about 4 minutes shorter, in the middle of July it’s about 2 minutes shorter day to day

A bit of advice, OP. When someone says, "it's Christmas already, how did that happen?!" you don't need to give them a lecture on the earth's rotation around the sun.

Do you often find regular things confusing?

My OH is like this, he doesnt understand social niceties, chit chat, generalisations, the bits of conversation that oil social interaction. He would probably take comments like this literally too.

Of course people don't forget. Just like they don't forget it gets colder in autumn and warmer in spring. They're just commenting on the passing seasons. YABU to act like this is a problem.

Of course people are aware but surely it’s a normal part of every day chat to comment that the ‘nights are drawing in’ etc? It’s a communal experience - much like talking about the weather. It’s not like they are expressing shock that the days get shorter!

I’d be the pedant who said, ‘but these times are NOT the same as other Aug 30! What about leap years and how they affect chronological time?’

It’s just small talk, everyday chit chat, people being sociable.

Its just observation and conversation with the changing of the seasons. Yes we all know it gets darker in evenings as we approach Autumn, but often it creeps up and you comment on it. Very normal thing to do.

Why are your days driving to and from work numbered? Is your car solar powered?

Presumably vision issues driving in the dark, headlight glare and suchlike

Modern cars have bright lights which dazzle me as my eye condition has issues with glare.

Plus some EVs have imo, excessive amount of lights on the rear of their cars.

I've been thinking of getting some. I'm fine driving in the dark on quiet country roads (which thankfully my commute is) but in towns with bright headlamps and street lights it all gets rather too dazzling.

People are just making conversation about the passage of time, rather than forgetting about sunrise/sunset times. Just like when someone's makes comment about how light it is in the mornings in spring/summer time.

Because soon there won’t be any daylight on the commute to work.

I once shared a flat with a guy from Australia.

We had a conversation one evening which was him saying, "It's 10 pm and it's still light"

I think he gets a pass because it was the first summer he'd spent in the UK.
