Waitrose free coffee now tastes like sulphuric piss!
They have changed their coffee beans from costa to their own Waitrose No 1. The coffee is now bitter and undrinkable.

The Aldi instant coffee is fine. Take some with you in your cup and get the free hot water in Waitrose.

bababamama · 29/08/2026 17:09

It’s been undrinkable for years here, like dishwater. That said most coffee shops are terrible too, they don’t use enough coffee

I’m sorry your FREE coffee isn’t to your taste! 😂 honestly some people!

So you feel it's OK for things that are free to be disgusting ? How do you feel about free school meals, or food from food banks ? (As you capitalised FREE that is clearly what you consider the important factor in whether someone is allowed to like or not like something)
What is the point of something that is undrinkable, whether it is free or not?

The point is that Waitrose don't give out free coffee out of the goodness of their hearts, they do it to increase their customers, if it is horrible people won't specifically choose Waitrose because of their free coffee, they'll go elsewhere, probably somewhere a bit cheaper with no free coffee, so presumably they would take on board customer feedback if enough people tell them their coffee is horrible

usernamemustnotcontainspecialcharacters · 29/08/2026 17:37

That’s a shame. It was my lifeline when I became a new mum. I couldn’t afford Waitrose, but I’d call in 8.45am, buy butter, or a pink of milk and get my free coffee, walk round the park and the lake to the mums in another coffee shop in town to meet them leaving and we would go to playgroup. I couldn’t afford to meet them in the coffee shop. My ex was an arsehole - I never had any money of my own.
6 years later how life and the coffee have changed!

You can't compare free school meals and food banks to free Waitrose coffee. Waitrose free coffee is a luxury perk,The others are a necessity.

FlippingGiraffe · 29/08/2026 17:38

Costa is also shite - big up the small independents!

Well obviously you can't and obviously I wasn't. I was making the point that the poster emphasised the FREE aspect as if that is what is important in assessing things when clearly it isn't because some free things such as free necessities, have to be of a high standard. So the FREE aspect of the coffee is irrelevant. She needs a better argument other than 'it's free so it's fine if it is crap' Freeness doesn't justify crapness.

Also it's not a luxury perk, it's a marketing ploy like club card points or nectar or whatever, it's something accounted for in a store's budget as being worthwhile.

Free coffee in Waitrose?

What do I have to do to try it out? Minimum shopping spend? Join something? Is it in every Waitrose?

Do they still do that thing where they give away green tokens and you put one in a charity box at the end of the checkouts, then that is their charity of the month or something?

nomas · 29/08/2026 17:52

Waitrose no.1 is hardly cheap.

AccidentallyOnTrend · 29/08/2026 17:55

Mumsnet can be really needlessly shitty sometimes. Sorry you’re getting kicked for having an opinion OP.

That’s why I said ‘not to your taste’ obviously some people do like it! Read the comment next time before getting on your high horse!

In other news, the servicing cost of my Bentley is just the worst.

Try harder 🥱

Disingenuous? I said “not to your taste” precisely because I was acknowledging that it’s subjective. I never claimed nobody likes it. Do you just like to argue with people?

Diddums. #firstworldproblems

How rude. Since when has MN only been for issues that you think are worthy? It’s for idle chat, daft games, anything really. Just get off the thread if it’s not for you.

You just need one of their loyalty cards!
You need to take your own cup, it really isn’t as awful as the OP makes out it’s fine.

Sometimes. My bad, apologies.

OverpricedCupcake · 29/08/2026 18:21

Our Waitrose closed because the kids from the school opposite were constantly shoplifting.
I live in a naice town too!
It's a Morrisons now and absolutely shit, always low on stock, maybe connected to the shoplifting kids.

So is everyone else. And they are making their opinion clear.

Waitrose No 1 is their premium brand so they aren't just putting cheap rubbish in. Maybe the blend isn't to your liking but it isn't undrinkable.

costa is dreadful anyway!

My local one uses Caffè Nero beans. It was out of order when I was in last time, maybe they are switching over.

Oh that was probably me. I am the kiss of death to Waitrose free coffee machines, they see me walk in and immediately throw a wobbly. Happens every time. Either that or they go into a needs more milk mode, or a long clean cycle. Apologies to everyone, I don’t know why they hate me so.

BigMoandtheEStreet11 · 29/08/2026 18:25

Wasn’t it Cafe Nero? It’s gnat’s piss anyway but it’s free which helps choke down the bitterest brew. The stuff at my local is only between in terribleness by one a bought from Greggs a few months ago which was dumped after one sip and that really disappointed me as Greggs coffee used to be passable.

Indeed! When will MNetters learn rich people have problems too you know. We aren’t all benefit scroungers struggling with the cost of living. We’re real people with real issues. Just because they’re different to yours doesn’t make them any less meaningful.

Waitrose coffee is literally completely free. I get it because I can’t afford a £2 cup from a coffee shop. You don’t have to actually shop at the Waitrose to get it.

RunningNananananananananana · 29/08/2026 20:00

I don't think the free coffee has ever been Costa has it? Caffe Nero supply the beans afaik, unless it's changing.
