Is anyone Serbian or knows Serbia-
I can't get hold of my son and he doesn't have his phone on him, his friend has it.

This is very unlike him and I am worried sick

Can you contact the British Embassy in Serbia? They could direct you further.
If you truly think it's an emergency, talk to the police so they can contact their counterparts in Serbia.

HelpInSerbia · Today 04:24

Thank you. I don't know what to do- I don't know if it is an emergency, his friend is really worried, he is a young adult, i can't imagine the UK police would be concerned yet, I'm really trying not to over react. I have tried the hospital but I can't communicate with them

Does anyone know how to use a language app to translate when ringing. I don't have a second device

TheSquareMile · Today 04:52

OP, I think that the best thing will be to ring the number given for the FCDO in London and let yourself be guided by them.

Is it overkill, or is it best to contact asap. I just keep thinking that this must happen to lots of people every day and they just turn up - we coped without phones in the past, just so reliant on them now.

I just don't know what to do or what anyone can do at this time- I can't communicate with the hospital, they answer the phone but we can't communicate.

Thanks, for not leaving me here alone, I don't know what to do

How come his friend has his phone?
When was he last in contact with his friend?
Did his friend alert you to the fact that he’s ‘missing’ or did you contact your son and the friend answered?

VenusThighTrap · Today 05:03

Why is his friend worried - is it because they got separated and your son doesn’t have his phone? Why are you calling the hospital?

I hope everything is ok OP, it is horrible not knowing what is happening with your child.

TheSquareMile · Today 05:03

OP, why are you ringing the hospital?

Do you have reason to believe that he has come to harm?

Ring the FCDO in London on
020 7008 5000.

If they agree that something needs to be done, they will contact the Duty Officer in Belgrade.

We need more information to offer guidence. We cannot tell you if it's overkill or not as we have zero information.

Firstly, just take a breath. Panicking and calling random hospitals isn't going to help, particularly as in all likelihood you aren't calling the correct place.

How long has it been since someone was last in contact with him?

I'm trying to find out but the signal is so patchy- they were separated but his friend has his phone - which is why the friend is worried - I don't know any more details and waiting to connect back when they get signal, but his friend called me in the middle of the night so he is worried

You are right, I'm not sure - I was contacted about 3am but I don't know anymore.

I really am trying to be sensible, I've read loads of threads on here over the years, asking for a handhold and they always turn out fine . But now it's me and I feel paralysed.

OP, Ring the FCDO in London on
020 7008 5000 and be advised by them

Frrrout · Today 05:11

You need the following from the friend :
Last known location
who your son was last seen with
drug or alcohol use
unusual behaviour in recent days
your sons plans/planned movements for tomorrow
how your sons friend got the phone
does anyone know your sons phone code to open it

call the friend now, have pen and paper handy to write answers. Then go from there.

DaisyDooley · Today 05:17

Ypu need to calm down .
Panicing and ringing random hospitals 8n Serbia is ridiculous.

First -make a list of questions you need answering like
a) where exactly are they
b) where exactly was son last time he was seen/What time was it
c) is he drunk
d) is he on any (illegal) drugs
e) what was he doing
f) what was he wearing
g)where are they staying?
h) was son alone or with others -or any locals
i) how much money did son have with him
j) does son have key to where they are staying?

Questions like this.
Ifvyou end up phoning the Embassy you will need to have information for them.
So, get a cup of tea, a pen & paper &write as many questions as you can.

Then -text your son’s friend. Can he receive text messages?
If he can -write him the most important questions and try to get some answers.

Why is your son’s friend in a panic? Just because he has his phone??

Im sure he will be fine .

HelpInSerbia · Today 05:18

I've looked at the guidance, I can only report to the FCO, they can't do anything, the missing report would need to go to the Serbian Police and there will be an amount passed.

OP posts:
VenusThighTrap · Today 05:18

So as far as you know there hasn’t been an accident or a mishap other than the phone?

I imagine that since your son is old enough to travel he is savvy enough to figure this one out. It is a bit silly of his friend to phone you and worry you with not quite enough info.

I am sure it’ll be fine but sending you and your boy vibes until you hear something else.

Spartak · Today 05:19

Serbia is an hour ahead of us, so it would have been 4am there when they called.

Have they been out drinking? If so, you may not get much sense out of his friends at the moment.

Hopefully you'll get some answers soon. I'm not sure the FCO will do much right away.

He's a young adult who has wandered off from his mates on a night out.

His friends will need to report him missing as they have all the information about where he was last seen etc. Are they staying in a backpackers? If so, suggest that they go back there and ask the staff for help.

HelpInSerbia · Today 05:23

Thank you.

I am trying to get through but I can't - I had a message to say still not found about ten minutes ago

Friend is worried because doesn't know where he is, they were meant to be together, and for some reason friend has his phone. When I spoke to friend he seemed fine but worried, and didn't know what to do but I cant get through any more . But friend was ok when I spoke to him just worried enough to ring me, but now no contact.
