To keep my birthday clear?

Background, my birthday is a week after BILs. He has a big birthday this year. MIL is insistent that we get together to celebrate his birthday the day before my birthday. She won’t consider anything before his birthday. AIBU to say I want to celebrate with my birthday with my family and not agree to BILs event?

But it’s not on your birthday.

Fidgety31 · 26/08/2026 19:20

Why can’t you do both ?

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 26/08/2026 19:20

But if your birthday is after his, what's the problem?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 26/08/2026 19:21

It isn’t your birthday, it’s before your birthday. Celebrate yours on or after your birthday. Your thread title doesn’t even make sense because your birthday is clear.

why can’t you celebrate your birthday? His party is the day before your birthday

Jaimelefromage · 26/08/2026 19:21

Well this is easy. Yes, you can keep your birthday clear and you can celebrate your BILs birthday the night before your birthday. Problem solved!

Yupstillhere · 26/08/2026 19:25

You can celebrate your birthday on your birthday, you're being unreasonable. I would be happy to have a celebration with my in-laws the night before my birthday, you can do what you want with your family the next evening.

Moveoverdarlin · 26/08/2026 19:27

Yes you’re being unreasonable. Celebrate his big birthday by attending his do. The next day celebrate YOUR birthday.

Tomfooleries · 26/08/2026 19:29

Seriously? Do you think your birthday needs a gap before and after to be sufficiently important? Your BIL’s thing is the day before!

shuffleofftobuffalo · 26/08/2026 19:32

Is it that the event will mean everyone is hung over/tired on your birthday, so your plans might be ruined?

holjam · 26/08/2026 19:32

But your birthday is the day after? I can’t see the issue here? Is there doing go be a massive drip feed…

ladyb2gw · 26/08/2026 19:33

A lot of childish drama

21stNightOfSeptember · 26/08/2026 19:37

Why is it up to your MIL?

Surely your BIL can decide when and where he wants to celebrate his own birthday?

How old will you both be turning? You 17 and him 18?

Loulou4022 · 26/08/2026 19:39

I booked a party for my DH 50th on the Saturday before his birthday (which was a week day) I was mortified when I realised a week before that it was on his best friends wife’s actual birthday. She still came and celebrated with us and celebrated with her own family earlier in the day and the day before and day after!
Surely a big birthday trumps a normal birthday?

Thebinisrightthere · 26/08/2026 19:44

When does BIL want to celebrate his birthday?

somanychristmaslights · 26/08/2026 20:07

Some people get so obsessed with their birthdays, it’s bizarre. She’s suggesting the day before your birthday, so what’s the problem?

bookgirl1982 · 26/08/2026 20:09

Thanks All, I’m clearly being unreasonable and need to get over myself. Lots of context in the family dynamics but I will rise above.

Cosyblankets · 26/08/2026 20:14

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't get it

Ah C’mon give us the context!

Delatron · 26/08/2026 20:28

I’m not sure as there’s not enough information! Why does MIL get to dictate? What does you BIL want?

I’d understand if you didn’t all live locally and you have to travel for his birthday. But I do think big birthdays triumph others. I would also not celebrate mine the day after as I’’d be tired so I’d move mine to the following week.

Think we need context.
