I forgot it was DHs birthday…

I mean I did know it was today, had cards/gifts organised etc

However, when I woke up this morning it just didn’t register. DH woke me up for work and made my breakfast like usual, we have 2 DC so standard morning getting them organised for school and I think I was just on auto pilot.

I’ve never forgotten before and we have been together the best part of 17 years.

I did remember about an hour after being up, and before I left for work, so we did presents etc and I apologised profusely but I FEEL AWFUL ABOUT IT!!

he was fine, kind of laughed it off. We have his DM over for dinner later but what can I do to make up for it?? I’m going to try bake a cake before he gets home from work.

I think I’d be raging if he forgot it was my birthday 🤣 but he’s a better person than me so…

Other than a cake, what could I do to make him feel special?? Anyone else done something similar??

But you did remember and he's clearly not that bothered. You are a human so you're allowed to have a lapse in concentration.

ComtesseDeSpair · 25/08/2026 13:03

I wouldn’t even register this as “forgetting”: you didn’t forget, you knew it was today, you had cards and gifts, it just wasn’t the first thing on your mind during the hectic morning rush. It’s really not something to feel awful about or make up for, that an adult was wished happy birthday an hour after they woke up - make a cake if you were going to anyway or because it’s a nice thing to do for a birthday, but going overboard with apologising is unnecessary.

toottoot3 · 25/08/2026 13:08

An hour before registering is okay, you have presents in, dinner arranged. You haven't at 11pm bought garage flowers. Keep it in perspective, you have apologised, move on

MyArtfulGreySloth · 25/08/2026 13:09

You didn’t really forget though. Sounds like you’re stressing over nothing. It’s not like you didn’t even get him a card and gifts, you just forgot to say happy birthday first thing 🤷🏻‍♀️

DarkForces · 25/08/2026 13:10

A homemade cake would pretty much make up for any and all wrongs in my world!

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 25/08/2026 13:12

I wouldn't do anything, but then birthdays aren't a big deal at all in this house - I regularly forget my own until I've been up for a while Grin

ViaRia01 · 25/08/2026 13:14

Would you usually say happy birthday the moment he wakes up then? My husband and I usually do gifts a little later, mid morning if we’re both at home that day. After getting dressed and ready for the day I’d walk into the kitchen and see a card and gifts laid out on the table and so a sort of faux display of “oh is it my birthday!?”

MellowSubmarine · 25/08/2026 13:14

I think it’s weird that you’d be raging if the situation was reversed.

But if you do want to make it up to him (I’m not sure it needs it) I don’t see that a cake would make a difference. Surely there’d be a cake anyway? So it’s not something you’re doing to make it up to him.

You could get him a large inflated birthday balloon etc. Ss it is you didn’t forget his birthday - you just forgot what day it is. If you have gifts etc for him later, he’ll be fine. If he’s not… that’s a whole other thread, isn’t it?

Thanks for your perspective.

it was my birthday recently and he always makes a big deal of it, breakfast in bed etc. so I guess I just feel bad that he had to go an hour this morning running after us all without me (or DC!) acknowledging his birthday 🙈

He’s so good to us, I just feel really terrible about it. It’s so not like me either to forget something like this!

chocolate cake it is, and a bottle of wine to share

Write him a poem.

CynicalSunni · 25/08/2026 16:25

I have forgotten my own birthday before a cup of coffee.

roundabouttheforstday · 25/08/2026 16:29

Personally I’d just randomly chuck something sexy ON once MIL leaves and just bang him hard on the sofa and I’d expect you forgetting for an hour this morning ing will be more than forgiven

Elmtrees · 25/08/2026 16:30

@peeved123 You and your dh sound lovely!

I'm sure he'll enjoy the chocolate cake and wine this evening 🥳

TearLoaf · 25/08/2026 16:32

I’m sure he can move past this! It is so nice to hear about a normal healthy relationship on here. Makes a nice change.

Exactly what I was thinking when I read the OP's posts, it's so nice to read about a happy marriage here!

malloryknox123 · 25/08/2026 18:29

That’s what is commonly known as a brain fart. You did remember, you bought gifts.

Gardenisablooming · 25/08/2026 18:30

I know what would have my dh forgive me anything....

peeved123 · 26/08/2026 18:25

Thanks everyone

I pretty much did all of the above 😜 but obviously he wasn’t actually upset. He enjoyed the ‘extras’ nevertheless 😂

My DH once gave me a Happy Anniversary card for my birthday. He said he didn't look at the writing, just the picture.🙄

Eventmrs · Today 10:37

I once completely forgot it was fathers day. I had cards and presents and wasn't until the end of the day I spotted them in the dining room - lol

To be honest we'd had a full on day so that was my excuse.
