AIBU to question rising private school fees amid declining GCSE results

Private school GCSE decline.

What happened? Is this an example of what’s to come?

Fees are rising well beyond inflation annually yet, results are in decline.

State schools prioritising, ‘reserving seats’ in house for 6th Form. Risky investment?

It’s not “someone”

it is ONE THIRD of the families at Independent Schools!!!!

But I don't talk about that third.

Those who are paying the whole fees - but can't afford holidays, gifts and hobbies - those are the stupid ones here, who are paying for status which they can't really afford.

You misunderstand,

Since VAT independent schools launched their “hardship support funds” where those with the broad shoulders were told they should carry the weight of those who are struggling.

Many families who were once full fee payers are no longer. Seeking hardship criteria being no new cars, holidays, etc For those already on fee remission I imagine they’ll have some access to double dip support. Independents are not monitored they are free to move or assign funds as they see fit!

So what we’re left with is an unbelievably tiered “Fee” structure.

Families talk. The Chinese whispers or the truth of stories of negotiated fees, hardship support are well documented and circulating.

How naive or ridiculous would you have to be to know this is happening yet, continuing paying your full fee!

You ARE the poster who kept bleating on about staff discounts. For goodness sake, take your children out and put them in State schools. You will feel better. Just accept others will not remove their children though - that’s what you are struggling to deal with.

Parents don’t aways send kids to private schools for grades. You know that don’t you? It’s a much more enriching experience. They come out of it much happier and more confident. That probably helps them more in future life than being a few grades higher in a few subjects.

Or too confident looking at some of my family members who went to one 😬

That is hardly new. Eton had to start admitting the middle classes in the middle of last century. Up to then their results didn’t matter because their students wouldn’t have been looking for jobs

Really? Up until 1950s no Etonian would have needed a job? My father went there in the 1930s and he and all his friends from there had jobs.

I didn’t say they didn’t have jobs. I said they didn’t have to look for them. They had jobs waiting for them.

I have no idea what you’re talking about!

40,000 have already left.

The truth and official communications circulating like wild fires across what’s app groups provide all the evidence.

Yes there are elevated begging letters, yes 1/3 and growing are being subsided, yes there are cuts to provision and service standards.

The ONLY people who get infuriated with the suggestion of such or the nudge that families should delve deep into school finance are…..…….

The ONE in THREE + in receipt of the subsidies!!!

In fact, in places like Germany/Switzerland there are Steiner schools where families pay fees based on income on a sliding scale and dependent on how many children they have.

I know of a Waldorf school that used to do that in the UK. They closed because they went bust. (Many years ago - pre VAT etc)

https://www.steinerschule-basel.ch/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Skala_Schule_2026_27.pdf

Here you go, as an example. This is a large one for Switzerland and a successful one. I think taxes in Switzerland are filed for each family in detail per year so it is not like people could lie or fake their official income. It seems contribution is per family. It talks about solidarity amongst teachers and parents. Perhaps the school is also funded by the Steiner endowments and donations fund to top up.

Frankfurt - the more kids you have, the cheaper per child.

Dooferer · 25/08/2026 12:52

Independent school provide a calm, violence free environment which allows high functioning ASD children to cope without being overwhelmed. Thats the only reason why we fork out for our ND child to go there. The other 3 have had to ‘slum it’ at state schools. There are so many families in the same situation, and it would be so nice if either:

  1. They sorted state education out so all schools had a calm, safe environment which allowed ND and NT children to learn, or;

  2. they scrapped the VAT on fees for parents like us who would be DELIGHTED to be able to use state provision, but can’t.

And this one is subsidised by the German local Government depending on need it seems and then what parents pay is individualised.
Seems like France and Germany help with private school education top ups.

So I guess OP - you want a private education and cannot afford it in the UK. Move country then. I don’t think Waldorf would be your cup of tea though nor a typical French Catholic education either.

40,000 have exited so far

The independent “hardship support” will grow this year.

Again, Fees will rise

amidst a backdrop of cuts to the provision.

Any guess on the total figure of leavers 26/27 academic year…….?

It will affect schools differently though - our school is in a much stronger financial position and has been able to absorb/ delay some of the VAT impact as a result of another local school closing. So in my region there has been a drop in private school pupils but the consolidation has taken the pressure off remaining schools.

It’s not about simply absorbing VAT

Private schools have increased fees beyond inflation for a decade. They’re unsustainable.

The worry for independent school is not making them affordable….

Its making them affordable WHILST providing the value for money and elevated service standard people sign up for,

No brownie points for absorbing VAT.

What will be interesting to monitor is the provision.

If independent decline and state (VAT cash injection) improve,

Families will increasingly leave due to there simply being no reason to stay.

Section 4 has the official figures and decline in pupil numbers.
Seems like the OBR has to update their forecast of how much this policy will raise as there is already a 5% decline in mainstream independent. Boarding is a much higher decline more than 8%.

Meanwhile independent special has gone up 14.4%. Presumably mostly taxpayer funded, at huge cost. The key question is how many of those kids were previously in independent mainstream? Or could have been at a cheaper cost. Independent special is an average cost of 62k per pupil.

Personally I just want to know how much Labour has cost us the taxpayer.
Even best case scenario of raising over a billion, it was never going to make a substantial dent in the state school budget which is in excess of 65 billion.
The fact Labour have driven more kids into independent special schools entirely funded by the taxpayer was largely predicted.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 25/08/2026 15:41

I can’t work out whether you have a child in an independent school or not. Either way, either take them out or don’t start them in the system. What else do you want? Would it make you feel better if everyone else took their child out too? Honestly, enjoy state school education and the extra money in your pocket. Move on and don’t keep focusing on what private schools do or don’t offer. You can take pleasure in them closing (if they are as bad as you think) or enjoy having more money to spend if they don’t. But you have to accept that other people’s children will still attend independent schools and most will gain a lot from the experience.

Nobody involved in the scam likes the whistleblower,

No “independent” school parent tells me what to do.

Should I choose I will create new threads, daily. I will repost news of every independent school begging letter,

That’s my prerogative.

Where are you getting all these ‘begging letters’ and why haven’t you actually posted any of them?
It’s all very curious!

Araminta1004 · 25/08/2026 16:38

Most likely a Labour supporter - desperate for the VAT policy not to get pulled. Pupil numbers are down more than 7,5% Jan 26 to Jan 24 according to official DFE forecasts. So that is way beyond and Parliament is on notice that the policy has failed? Just like we all predicted because it failed in every other country around the world that tried to implement something similar.
So if numbers are down against forecasts, the policy has failed? I mean the IFS predicted 6% max over 5 years and they are already at 7,5% down in just two years

And those who pushed for the policy obviously are now desperate.

It has only failed if you believe it was introduced to raise money rather than for ideological reasons. Labour would never pull
it.

I don’t believe OP has a child in private school, I think she just has a vendetta against them.

Araminta1004 · 25/08/2026 17:43

“Private schools currently benefit from an unfair tax break that means they avoid paying VAT on fees. Through closing this loophole, Labour will raise vital money needed to improve standards in stretched state schools with more teachers. This funding will also help pay for mental health support staff in every school, working to boost the wellbeing of young people.”

The manifesto was explicitly to raise funds.

The manifesto pledge was not to harm private schools?

Oh no the letters in our mums group private kids/ state kids/ no kids expressly state due “due to the unprecedented times and VAT on fees it is critical we pull together and those with the broadest shoulders should help our community X-school “support fund” applicants will be monitored no news cars, holidays, lifestyles etc for this additional support! (Taken from Fee money others pay in!) Entire “support” glossy documents and PDF where you can ‘donate’ monies specifically mentioning going to school repairs, projects, hardships, bursary basic school upkeep and maintenance.

Non “private” families offering to buy a coffee or lunch for those tied into independent schools as they have no money everything going to the school fees!

The Wealthy within the group complaining of the reduced quality of food and constant emails explaining why things are being pulled or cancelled. From experience it is the wealthy who are the most price conscious, they must see return of investment.

Regular Fee paying families at these schools are having an awful time. Sacrificing a lot. No summer holidays barely affording a coffee with friends. Constant dread with annual Fee increase.

Children within the same friendship circles of the same age groups thriving, no difference in education attainment. One family no financial burden and plenty disposable income the other drowning in school fees.

Sounds like anecdotal evidence to me. Also you're writing 'style' is really grating.
