Screwed up at traffic lights, help

It's fully my fault, just stressed and unsure what to do. I stopped at the lights on a one way street, before the 'no entry'. It turns out the actual stop line was a thin line further back on the road that I missed, so I'd stopped before the end of the road and lights but past the stop line.

A police 'dog unit' stopped behind me, I saw him gesturing at me then beeped, so I went as I thought I was meant to go, the light was still red.

I went and the police car turned the other way, I saw the guy look at me again. Only been driving a few months and I feel sick, it was a silly mistake, I'm not someone who speeds or runs reds on purpose. Has anyone else had this? I've just got to deal with it.

Everyone makes mistakes, you’re only human.

The chances are absolutely nothing will
happen. No-one died or was as injured. Think of it as a learning opportunity :)

SillySallySaidSo · 22/08/2026 17:02

Are you sure you didnt stop at the repeater light for another direction of traffic? I've seen lots of new/ unconfident drivers do this and would explain you stopping at the wrong place and the police officer tooting.

Itiswhysofew · 22/08/2026 17:03

Not sure what the police were up to beeping at you? But, if they'd wanted to deal with your mistake, they would have ther & then.

All drivers make errors. You just learn to be more observant😊

BlueMum16 · 22/08/2026 17:06

Don't over think it. It's fine. Nothing will happen now after the event.

If it's a junction you do regularly and are unsure maybe use Google maps street view to look at the junction and signage so you are better prepared for next time.

dnadiscoveryquery · 22/08/2026 17:06

You couldn’t have known what he meant by beeping you.

We all make mistakes, and you’ll have definitely learnt from it.

When I had just passed I made a lot of silly mistakes. Try not to stress yourself. You’re obviously genuinely upset by your mistake, and don’t do it on purpose.

Iguessthatswhytheycallittheblues · 22/08/2026 17:06

Thanks everyone. I thought they were beeping me to go because I'd crossed over the line, I've just got to deal with it now.

But the actual stop line was a line quite a way back

Looking at that photo you don't seem to be traffic controlled but that's probably because you'd gone over the stop line.

Did the Police van crossed on red too?

SillySallySaidSo · 22/08/2026 17:12

If the lights chnage after you have passed the stop line then you are supposed to keep going, otherwise you are in the middle of the junction.

They went just behind me but maybe the light had already changed, I think i was too panicked to notice, then they turned off the other way

Police car was more at fault than you were - why are they beeping you? It's so unnecessary.

BlueMum16 · 22/08/2026 17:20

So if the light was on green when you passed you should have continue. The Police was just giving you a beep to get you out of the interchange.

Please dont worry

Slowlorissa · 22/08/2026 17:23

What do you mean you have to ‘deal with it.’ Nothing is going to happen.

BoundaryGirl3939 · 22/08/2026 17:24

Let it go. It was a MISTAKE. We all make them.

Iguessthatswhytheycallittheblues · 22/08/2026 17:25

The light was on red, i stopped just before that no entry road marking, can't believe i thought that was the stop bit, anyway I don't know if they beeped me to go or to alert me

I'm a new driver so don't want to be getting points in my first few months

I pretty much did same in Cardiff with heddlu watching me. Nothing happened although I fully expected a fine. I think the police tend to nick you at the time if they do.

BoundaryGirl3939 · 22/08/2026 17:29

I remember getting beeped at at a roundabout years ago as a learner. I was shook for a few hours 🤣
Now if that was to happen, I wouldn't care.

Iguessthatswhytheycallittheblues · 22/08/2026 17:43

Thanks for reassuring me everyone. I'll just have to wait and see, says if it's your first offence they may offer a course

OP posts:
UhOhRatPoo · 22/08/2026 17:49

What are you on about? Nothing happened. Nothing will happen. The police dog unit have better
things to do than call in traffic offences. They will have forgotten about what they saw within 2 minutes. If they had wanted to stop you they’d have stopped you then and there.

Ohdearwhatsthisthen · 22/08/2026 17:52

If it makes you feel any better I went into the back of someone not long after I passed my test and wrote my car off.

(I have over 10 years no claims now just for the record)

Thank you i just don't know why they needed to beep me then I saw the driver looking back at me as I drove off.

I did similar without anyone beeping I had stopped after the line but then drove through the red light 4 weeks ago and haven't received a fine as yet. I have been driving for 30 years so don't worry!

LivingTheDreamish · 22/08/2026 18:00

Is it possible the dog unit were on a call and were gesturing you to move out of their way? I don’t think they would be concerned about a minor driving offence. Totally understand the new driver anxiety though.
