AIBU to ignore GCSE results queries during holidays before maternity leave?

Currently 38+5 pregnant. Teacher and so fortunately finished for the summer as normal in July. Had it not been the summer holidays, I would have taken maternity leave at 37 weeks anyway. DH and I have also been ill for a few days this week with a fairly bad stomach bug.

GCSE results’ day yesterday. Only Heads of Department and senior staff expected to be in school/contactable on the day, which I am not. This is stated in contract.

Received an informal Teams’ message from Head of Department yesterday saying they needed to speak with me regarding a particular student (a simple case of organising a remark which only HoD can do anyway) and could I let them know when I was free to talk. I felt really annoyed that firstly I was being contacted during the holidays, secondly that they are fully aware I am close to my due date/would have been on maternity leave otherwise, and thirdly that there is nothing I can do to help. HoD has form for passing on work which is their’s to do. I ignored their message. I then also had several students sending me messages on Teams late last night regarding remarks. I very briefly replied to them saying to speak to the HoD.

I emailed the HoD and Deputy Head Academic this morning explaining that although I had seen the overall results, I was not really in a position to begin analysing paper breakdowns, discussing remarks, and contacting students/parents. I said I was happy for any remarks to be processed. As of tonight, I have had no reply.

YABU - results are important and you should be involved as their teacher.
YANBU - You should not be contacted during school holidays as per your contract, and especially given the proximity to your due date and that you would have been on maternity leave anyway if not for the holidays.

I appreciate that it's tricky for teachers to go to the toilet sometimes. What's not fair is assuming that everyone else has free access to three toilet, kettle etc. Many are just as constrained as a teacher, others more so. For those that work longer hours, the same challenges arise but for longer.

It's not all teachers, but on these threads, a sizeable proportion of teachers on them seem to think that teachers are unique in the downsides of the job.

Lesson changeover.... can't go then. Have to supervise the kids
When kids are working... no chance
Just leave the kids for a few minutes... really?
I'm not saying teachers are the only ones but to say it's tricky sometimes and then list impossible times to go just shows how little you understand about it.

I don't know any professional that gets a paid lunch, not just teachers

Once again for those nit picking and not fully reading or ignoring what has been written.

The 1265 calendar ensures that teachers get a lunch, and that they are not forced to do a lunchtime duty every day.

Does that make it clearer?

FrippEnos · 23/08/2026 09:17

blossomsnow

I find it astonishing how often teachers think their role is so unique.

No teacher has said this. Please stop making this shit up.

I’ll beg to differ but you sound a right pain to work with and the type that’s dragging the UK out of the top tier.

😂 it really shows what someone is like when they resort to personal insults rather than respecting a difference of opinion. I won’t be engaging anymore with you

Absolutely clear as mud, teachers don't get paid for lunch, my point being not does anyone else.

Nobody has assumed that everyone else has free access to the toilet, kettle etc.

And once again no teacher has said that the downsides are unique to teaching sizeable or otherwise.

But you have proved what I posted upthread.💐

Thanks.

You at 08.37 this morning in relation to non teachers:

"Yet you get to go make a coffee, or the toilet as you want. Teachers do not
You are choosing (as many teachers do) to work through their lunch."

It's your own assumption 😂.

Yes, it's tricky.

The same way it is in many other jobs.

Well done, now post it in context and read it properly.

Remebering that you posted this

So don't pretend that you have some sort of moral high ground when you are posting made up rubbish

Um I did.
I take it English isn't one of your subjects.

Comprehension clearly isn't something that you are good at.

Our school has a policy that we do not need to deal with emails during the holidays. REVIEWS can and should wait until term starts. Your HOD is perfectly capable of looking through a paper and making a decision without you being involved. Your HR department would not be happy that he/she is causing stress to a pregnant member of staff.

Stress? Seriously….?

Says the person who made a glaring assumption, denied it, and when it was pointed it out, tries to invent a context that wasn't present.

You made an assumption, just own it.

Your misreading is nothing to do with me.
But reread this and apply it to yourself.

I've checked the post you must be referring to, and it's explicitly clear that I'm not talking about 'teachers' but a sizeable proportion of teachers. So no.

It's also their, not there.

I fully agree that other jobs have their issues. I've never said otherwise. But not being able to leave a class unattended doesn't make going to the toilet tricky, it makes it impossible in the examples you've given.

Yes, for limited blocks of time, in a shorter than average day.

There were certainly times in my previous job when it was equally impossible for me to go to the toilet from 9-1 and 2-5, and a struggle between 1-2. So similar to you, but slightly longer.

I'd categorise my own situation as being tricky for the loo and not impossible. So I'm using the same measure for you.

There are so many jobs this applies to.

Notellinganyone · 23/08/2026 11:07

I’ve already fielded about 6 emails while on holiday in Greece. However if I was in your position I would expect my HOD to deal with this. Can you put your email onto an automatic maternity leave message.

I didn't realise it was a competition on who could hold out the longest. I was pointing out that the examples you gave were not tricky but impossible.

Nothing to do with other jobs.

BlackBean2023 · 23/08/2026 12:12

And yet teachers will tell you they don’t get 13 weeks holiday…

You’re not on maternity leave so they were NBU to contact you. Being pregnant doesn’t impair your ability to support a student with a paper based activity - lots of women work right up to their due date.

You sound awkward and entitled.

It's not a competition or a race to the bottom. It's the reality of many jobs (some teaching jobs included), that there are restrictions on where you can use the toilet.

This isn't a unique or even unusual element of the job. I'd suspect that aside from office work, most jobs have restrictions on when you can use the toilet, even if they allow for a bit more access than teaching. Then there'll be other jobs where is is more extreme than teaching.

Teaching is not a vocation, no. We've not taken holy orders.

Look up the meaning of vocation! It is no where linked to holy orders 🤣
