To be freaked out

Renting a holiday villa in a very remote part of Greece, right in the mountains and nothing around. Kids just been having a late swim (it’s quarter past midnight here) and a drone has been circling the lit up pool, I pointed a camera at it and it zoomed off but seemed to lang in a dark field behind the villa. We’ve gone out on the roof terrace after putting kids to bed and it’s hovering over the lit up back garden, as soon as my husband took out his phone to film it it immediately retreated. Really hoping it’s kids but no idea why they’d be in a field in the middle of the night, am terrified it’s some psycho who’s going to break in in the night and kill us all. Am I overreacting? My husband keeps on going out to check on it and has offered to try and find them (I declined - feels like the start of a horror film) but is telling me he doesn’t think it’s anything to worry about (he’s also scoured the house for a weapon though!)

The owners keeping a watch on you maybe?

Giftspread · 19/08/2026 22:24

I've found Greeks to be great people watchers. Its probably a local messing about with a drone. Greece is a pretty safe country, I wouldn't worry.

HeyThereDelilah1 · 19/08/2026 22:27

The owner said he isn’t on the island at the moment but is very nice and seems pretty chilled, I hope not!

It would freak me out too

And that’s usually the plot twist in the horror movie!!

HeyThereDelilah1 · 19/08/2026 22:35

It’s back again… past half midnight here. Trying to tell myself it could be checking for wild fires, but surely not just directly over our villa and where the hell is the person flying it?! Standing in a dark field… so bloody odd.

Film it and share on SM
throw things at it?

Giftspread · 19/08/2026 22:41

On some of the smaller islands everyone knows whats going on and whos there, at any given time. Crime on the islands is unlikely.

DogCatDogCat · 19/08/2026 22:42

I had a drone fly really close to me in my garden about a foot above my head in the UK. It only did it once and it freaked me out.

Gabbycat245 · 19/08/2026 22:59

That would massively freak me out too, OP.

Heathertrott2 · 19/08/2026 23:02

It's probably nothing, but I'm genuinely curious - what makes people decide to holiday in a remote part of a foreign country, in mountains, with nothing around? With kids? I get not wanting to be in touristy areas but isn't there a safe middle ground?

Good luck,.I'm sure it's just kids messing around

TwoBagsOfCompost · 19/08/2026 23:03

Greek here. I would doubt very, very much that it’s a potential murderer/stalker 😆 I fucking hate drones with a passion but sadly they are bloody everywhere in Greece. Where in Greece are you? No worries if you don’t want to say 😆

Definitely start throwing rocks at it. That will soon stop them!

TheSmellOfSea · 19/08/2026 23:04

Is it low enough for you to lob things at it? A hose anywhere?

Brownbear8 · 19/08/2026 23:04

I’d report to local police since it is illegal activity. They might be able to put your mind at rest and if anything were to happen you have already notified them of the risk.

Pieceofpurplesky · 19/08/2026 23:36

I would also contact local police. I would be really freaked out and autistic DS would have left!

FlorenceLawrence · 19/08/2026 23:49

That would really freak me out. I mean, it's unlikely to be a psycho killer, but it's a massive invasion of privacy.
Lock up well tonight, close shutters/draw blinds.

HeyThereDelilah1 · 20/08/2026 06:22

So we’re in Crete and a 25 minute drive from beautiful beaches and a bit less to villages. So not completely isolated but nowhere obvious for a drone to be coming from! We all survived the night though and all the drone surveillance from the terrace meant we also saw the Milky Way and a ton of shooting stars! I’m guessing it’s nothing but will see if it turns up against tonight, hoping not!

The police won’t do anything

This is not only Greek police, but actually Cretan police. I’d love to be a fly on the wall when the OP goes and reports a drone to them 😂😭😂😭😂😭

Are there any other houses nearby?
