Get a train from Piccadilly to New Mils, then a bus to Hayfield, then walk up Kinder Scout.

It's not a mountain but a biggish hill, that will give you a taste of what it's all about.

It's impossible to get lost.

It's where hiking began.

It's a grand day out

Lots of people saying Cat Bells which I understand because it does have an excellent effort/reward ratio, but Christ it gets busy (and I hate to say it but since covid there are a lot more dickheads visiting the Lakes), and parking anywhere near it can be difficult. Nearby I'd suggest Dale Head from Honister or Causey Pike or even Blencathra from Scales which is super accessible. Bleaberry Fell on the other side of Derwent Water has just as good views as Cat Bells but gets about 1/100th the traffic. If you're coming from Manc then any of the tops around the Kentmere valley or Longsleddale are easy to get to; Sadgill - Gatesgarth - Harter Fell - Kentmere Pike - Sadgill is a good round route.
