AIBU to worry about no contact from DP

I am posting here for traffic really. Also name changed as outing.
DP has been away trekking round Europe.
He sends me messages and photos every day.
This morning he sent me a photo of him at the top of the Sherpa steps in Norway.

I have heard nothing else since and this is unusual for him. I last messaged him at 4pm asking if he was back down the mountain and if he enjoyed his day. The messaged delivered but was un read.

I didn't worry too much but sent another one at 7pm asking if he was ok as I was worried about his lack of photos and contact. The message only recieved 1 tick this time.

Knowing him and his travelling companion they would have gone further up off the beaten track.

I have never been to Norway or mountian trekking.

Would anyone who has been to this particular place know of any dangers?

When I go on chatgpt it tells me to inform the Norwegian authorities, but I don't want to be wasting time if there's nothing wrong.
Thanks

Have you messaged the friend?
"Just checking you two are okay? Haven't heard from Paul that you're safely down."
Does friend have a partner you can reach out to and check?

Phones could need re-charging, or be out of range. It also doesn't hurt to call local authorities for advice. You can file a report and update them once you've heard.

I haven't been trekking in Norway but I went to Nepal earlier this year. Network was patchy in the mountains and sometimes it was simply too inconvenient to check the phone as this would mean stopping and falling behind the rest of the group. Not to mention that, on some days, we were simply too shattered once we got to the teahouse in the evening to do anything but eat, wash and sleep. I fear I missed quite a few communication windows with my partner that way. I did try to message at least once a day in the morning before we set off on the next leg.

Thanks for replies. The friend has no updates on their FB page as they normally would. I don't have the friends number or know any of their relatives etc.

Given both of them are not updating as they usually would, I would be letting the local authorities know (I would assume there are easy contact details for the area) - they will have an idea whether the conditions are poor or the particular location is more challenging, etc. You can tell them that you are not yet really, really worried, but that you’d expect to have heard from them. Then if, and hopefully it’s a ‘when’ not an if, you hear from them, you can let the authorities know immediately. I hope you do hear from him soon and that all is well.

Yes I will definitely be contacting them if zi hear nothing soon. Thanks everyone I will update.

How worrying for you. 🫶🏻

Hayleylulljah · 17/08/2026 20:53

I hope they’re just out of signal and you hear soon. I’d be worried.

Ahwelltoobad · 17/08/2026 20:55

FWIW, I just checked Norwegian news online, no report of accidents on the sherpa steps. I read Norwegian. Flowers

My Dad did this to us when he was in the Stans last spring... Disappeared from contact for the better part of three days...

Mum was going spare. Turned out he was fine, had been on an organised tour through the mountains and had no signal.

Try not to worry. I'm sure it's just a lack of signal/WiFi. You have my sympathy.

worreidaboutdpnow · 17/08/2026 21:26

Thanks everyone. He's contacted me and lost signal and battery dies.Omh @FalconHonour33 you poor mum. Thats a long time no contact!!

I dont think you'd be unreasonable to worry, nor do I think you'd be unreasonable to contact the relevant authorities.

I really hope you hear something soon!

Fortunately, they are amicably separated, so it all settled down once he reappeared, but yes, I did have to play the 'no news is good news' card several times that week! Meanwhile, I'd barely even noticed he hadn't been in touch! 😂

Glad you have resolved things and all is well ❤️‍🩹

What a relief! 🌸

They should really be providing contact details for each others emergency contacts pleased it was a happy ending.
