To think that Portsmouth Grammar School shouldn't have invited in GB News to film A level results

So it seems that my son's school Portsmouth Grammar featured GB News filming the A level results being opened - https://www.gbnews.com/news/video-results-day-a-level-student-opens-results-live-gb-news - this has been circulated widely among pupils.

Presumably the school would have had to agree to the filming?

This leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I note they filmed the blonde girl rather than any of the Asian or other minority ethnic pupils.

I feel that this is a bit poor of the school allowing GB News -which to my mind is not a proper news channel but more a pro-Farage opinion channel- into the school grounds.I know statistically some parents must be Reform supporters but most of us are not. And I believe GB News and Reform are seeking to divide not unite the country

Or am I being over-sensitive? Would I feel any better if it had been BBC News or Sky?

I work in a school which is very careful not to be overtly politically biased. For example, when we have hustings we invite all the major parties.

On a personal level, I agree with you that this is a mouthpiece for right wing opinions and would categorically not want my own children associated with that.

OtterlyMad · 15/08/2026 15:39

Ffs, the UK is 82% white, why on earth shouldn’t they feature a “white girl” opening her results?! Going out of their way to select an ethnic minority pupil would have been pointless tokenism.

Hottieeeee · 15/08/2026 15:41

You lost me at white

MargaretThursday · 15/08/2026 16:24

They will have chosen her because they knew she would be pleased, react accordingly and not say anything anyone would regret. She will have agreed to doing it.

None of mine would have been on it as one would have refused, one would have potentially been disappointed, and the other couldn't have been trusted to not say something silly.
You don't know how many refused before she said yes either.

LordFarquard · 15/08/2026 16:32

If you want to see ethnic minorities and refugees receive their results there is no shortage of that in almost every other news outlet and broadcaster.

Did they film only the one blonde girl or did they show a range of people? Should they have filmed only Asian or minority ethnic kids? Are you annoyed that they chose the blonde girl because she is white or because she is blonde or both? Do you think the white girl should have been hidden from view as if she were something to be ashamed of? Do you think her achievements count for less because she is white/blonde/both?

Broadcasters can broadcast but only if they agree with my views 😳🙄

hattie43 · 15/08/2026 16:35

Did you actually see it . There were no politics just nice interviews with kids and parents about their excitement and future plans . Horror of horrors there was also a brown face lad interviewed but I’m guessing you didn’t see that either .
Honestly get a grip of your bigotry OP , it’s any excuse to slag off a Channel that clearly assaults your senses but is very popular . Get over it you’ll be much happier .

Whatever about GB News and its associations (iffy enough, to be sure) it’s a very bad idea to turn school examinations into national sports events like the Cup Final, as has long been the practice in Ireland. You’d think winning a war depended on students achieving great grades, the poor kids.
It’s none of my flipping business.
Pupils are under quite enough stress as it is, and intruding on results day is an atrocious imposition on less confident kids. This is their big day and the moment all the blood, sweat, and tears are shown to have been worth it (or not, of course) We shouldn't be gawping, eager perhaps for heartbreak and meltdowns. (And gawd knows what the presence of cameras does to the terminally vain among the school stars)

Years ago, Private Eye used to run a spoof annual article mocking the likes of the Telegraph and Mail for their habit of publishing a general view of the nation’s A Level results, dwarfed by a photo of vivacious ‘fruity’ maidens in curtailed uniforms, leaping for joy and waving their results in the air.
Any excuse to print a picture of a few young girls to titillate readers, under the transparent guise of a report about education, was the Eye’s point.
Plus ça change, it seems

I don't like GB news and would be unhappy if my son's school filmed there

Yanbu

mumumental · 15/08/2026 22:16

It’s outrageous I think.

DaysIllRememberAllMyLife · 15/08/2026 22:17

Oh come on. There's no reason at all that they shouldn't celebrate a white girl getting her results.

NotAnotherScarf · 15/08/2026 22:26

Oh I'm sorry, but I didn't realise that you have complete editorial control over what people want to watch on TV. God forbid they like Dad's Army because clearly that's a right wing empiricist propaganda . And pepper pig..better axe that in case a pig on the TV offends Muslims. One foot in grave..ageist. Black Beauty... racist. Only fools and horses.... offensive to thick people....I know we'll watch repeats of It Ain't Alf Hot Mum...
