Given the amazing amount of interest and comments I thought I’d start another so we can continue the debate.

Well, I wasn’t expecting the original thread to reach 1,000 posts! It’s now full, so I’m starting a Part 2 as there are still interesting points being discussed, particularly around choice, social expectations, courtesy, and where we draw the line between “women can wear whatever they like” and having opinions about what’s appropriate in a given setting. For clarity, I’m still the OP. My initial reaction was a strong “this is horrible” at seeing a completely bare bottom while having lunch. Nearly 1,000 posts later, I’ve had time to reflect on that reaction, and the discussion has broadened well beyond the original incident. I fully support women’s freedom to choose what they wear and do with their bodies. That doesn’t mean I have to like every choice, and I don’t see having an opinion as the same as policing others. Anyway, over to you let’s continue.

I agree, OP.

Those of us who don’t like this clothing choice aren’t necessarily advocating going up to the woman and scolding her. But our opinions are as valid as anyone else’s and I would have thought MN is the place to air opinions about women, their choices and changes in social norms.

mumumental · 14/08/2026 13:20

It’s one of those things, isn’t it? I approve of women’s right to choose, but I wouldn’t want my dd to show her arse in the street.

Backontheboil · 14/08/2026 15:13

Wouldn’t do it myself
Would ask my teen daughter to grab a sarong

but

I wouldn’t comment I certainly wouldn’t judge, and if my kids did or, god forbid, my husband, I’d ask them to refrain from making comments on what others wear.

Then I’d turn to whomever was on their phone and ask them to put their phone away whilst we are having lunch.

Fiftyandme · 14/08/2026 15:18

Who knew a set of muscles could be so off putting for some.

OonaStubbs · 14/08/2026 15:36

It should be banned, no ifs, no butts.

Thestealer · 14/08/2026 15:42

Bloody hell.who knew a debate about someones arse could generate 2 threads 🙄

OonaStubbs · 14/08/2026 15:48

The woman only had 2 threads covering her arse, that's the problem.

BitterTits · 14/08/2026 15:53

I sort of wonder, in a society in which being clothed is the social norm, why is it considered judgemental to feel a little uncomfortable when the boundaries are challenged? And yet nudity is considered indecent.

As I said on the other thread - whatever we think about a thong bikini - I just feel its civilised to cover up a bit when you leave the beach and go to lunch (yes, I know the cafe is ON the beach, but the context is different).

There are lots of elegant things you could pop on for lunch - or just a pair of proper shorts would be an improvement.

I don't like thongs but on the beach proper, that's a personal choice. I do think almost bare buttocks are out of place at an eaterie.

There's a time and there's a place.

so it was a bare arse in a restaurant? Completely unacceptable.

I'm firmly in the bums are private and should be covered up camp.

I particularly dislike them being on display as its modern porn which has popularised the arse out trend. And I hate porn.

Yes it was a tiny micro thong, so effectively a completely bare bottom. It was a beach restaurant not the Ritz as someone pointed out up thread. But like you I think it’s respectful to other diners to cover up when you sit down to eat wherever it is.

There should be substantial fabric between arseholes and the rest of the world. Particularly if you plan to sit down.

Why is it something women choose to do and men don’t, I wonder?

Because of porn. It's that simple. You never used to see women showing their arse off before porn made anal sex "fashionable". Boobs yes but men have been interested in boobs since time immemorial. But the fetish for bottoms is a relatively recent phenomenon.

It's most defnitely the influence of porn. I don't know how people can miss that.

Driven, needless to say, by what the sleaziest, creepiest men like.

Gloriia · 15/08/2026 14:47

Another women's bums thread op! Has it happened again? A different offender perhaps or are we still talking about the one and only time you've experienced a thong at a beach cafe?
