AIBU to be annoyed by clothing adverts with awkward weird poses?

AIBU to be annoyed with clothing advertisements that show the person scrunched up or squatting or worse still with a dress on but then they stick a leather jacket over it so you can't actually see what the dress looks like properly. Can we just have a front view, back view and side view, no props no ridiculous poses such as bending over nearly doubled and laughing your head off. I know it's such a non issue but it's really starting to tick me off!!!

This drives me mental too on clothing websites.
Sometimes you can't even see the length of a top because every photo obscures it.

Unblushingly · 10/08/2026 10:35

It's a cheap way of saying 'We're not the Littlewoods catalogue, you know!'

Stegosaur · 10/08/2026 10:38

It just tells me that the garment doesn't hang nicely naturally, so I never buy it. If the garment looked great without the model pulling in the waist with their hand, or lounging back in a chair, then they'd show that. If they don't it's because it's not flattering.

I find M and S really bad for this. You really have no idea about important aspects of the item you are wanting to buy.

There are a lot of websites I visit intending to buy something but give up in frustration either because of this issue OP or because of inadequate filters so it's just too time consuming to bother. I only buy clothes as a necessity not because i actually enjoy browsing clothing retailer sites

Totally agree. Especially on social media, you then click through and it looks totally bland and uninspiring on its own.

theneighbourhadaparrot · 10/08/2026 18:59

Could not agree more!

H&M is putting model photos AND a picture of the item. It's not that hard

I am avoiding Zara and all the others now, which is annoying because they do have great clothes.

Samewrinklesnewname · 10/08/2026 19:06

Zara are terrible for it, and M&S aren’t far behind

Iftheskywasbkue · 10/08/2026 19:18

M&S seem to love posing their models with their legs akimbo. This example is for selling a blouse yet the model is leaning back, legs splayed - why? I don’t find that makes me want to buy the top!

@SchnitzelAgain I like that one though - you can really tell what the outfit looks like!

Blanknotebook · 11/08/2026 15:50

M&S have some awful adverts. I bet the poor models are embarrassed when they have to do such ridiculous poses and pull long miserable faces. One of the adverts makes the model look like she is having a bad reaction to a dose of Spice.

GreenShady · 11/08/2026 15:54

Oh this one from M&S - so unflattering to the garment apart from anything. Just why?

Different but similar 😃 - I was looking for some white knickers and they were displayed against a white background so almost impossible to see. Frequently with white clothes they do this and you have to click on an alternative colour (if there is one!) to see what it actually looks like.

Sometimes you also get black items on a “moody” background and you can’t see that either 🙄

I've never seen a unanimous vote on MN before!

Mapletreelane · 11/08/2026 17:53

Sorry these pictures made me laugh out loud lol! Yes they are ridiculous. Aphrase an older generation would use is "arty farty" I mean really ha ha! They all look so miserable and unhappy.

But then all the kids /influencers Instagram poses make me laugh, the look to the side, the look from behind, head down. There is not one ounce of originality in them, I feel like saying "stop following the herd and be yourself" but conformity seems to be the thing. Everyone starts to look the same (men and women).
