Ordered a take-away last week - a treat for me & my kids & not cheap. Usually we order from a local place but they are away on holiday, so ordered online from a global company.
Daughter has dairy allergy so ordered a vegan pizza for her. After ordering, received a call to say they had no vegan cheese so would we like to cancel the order & be refunded.
No refund 18 hours later (& left out of pocket at an expensive time & we are quite skint!)
Finally spoke to someone after I called a number of times who said refunds take 5 working days…
So annoyed. Need to wait until Friday for the money.
Emailed their ‘customer service’ to be told ‘sorry but we aren’t compensating you as we will be refunding you’
I want to escalate things for the inconvenience - poor system & rubbish response to my emails as well. Would this annoy you and AIBU?

Cheeky fuckers is what they are. I would leave a bad review for them OP.

When a refund is issued by a business you're usually told it will be 3-5 working days before the money is back in your account because the bank has to process the payment/refund.

TrunkElliot · 09/08/2026 22:51

Refunds are never instant. They usually take at least 3 days.

Createausername1970 · 09/08/2026 22:54

It would annoy me.

Treebaubles · 09/08/2026 22:56

Compensate you for what? Refunds are typically 3-5 days but sometimes can come faster. It’s just one of those things.

AbzMoz · 09/08/2026 23:01

Is this from a Deliveroo/Uber Eats type platform? You can usually take the credit in the app immediately but it takes longer to go back on card?

EllaMozarella · 09/08/2026 23:05

Thanks for your replies. I agree @cremebrulee972that they are cheeky fuckers. They did not say it would be 3-5 days to refund me, indicated it would be immediate. We couldn’t get another take-away as no money to do so therefore had to buy more food (from the shop) had disappointed kids and no leftovers for lunch next day. I’m needing to watch the £s at the moment so I think compensation for the inconvenience, lack of refund info initially, crap system (advertising pizzas they don’t have the ingredients for) is fair.

@AbzMozno, direct online order to the shop, was meant to be collecting as they are down the road.

I think it’s always 3-5 working days for a card refund.

Annoying but it’s a risk we take.

NoSummers · 09/08/2026 23:13

My card refunds usually the next day so maybe it depends on the bank. I wouldn’t expect any compensation. In future if you order through just eat you can select to have the money refunded to your account and thats instant.

H202too · 09/08/2026 23:16

Always bugs me that they can take it instantly but can't refund it as quickly. Tale as old as time. It isn't right.

HappiestSleeping · 09/08/2026 23:19

It isn't necessarily the fault of the vendor, sometimes it's the bank.

It is annoying in this day and age that they can take payment for something they don't have in stock though.

roseymoira · 09/08/2026 23:20

I think it’s more that the banks process refunds in batches, rather than the retailer

stillmagnolia · 09/08/2026 23:23

you’re the cf for expecting compensation for nothing

SmokyPotato · 09/08/2026 23:24

I think compensation for the inconvenience, lack of refund info initially, crap system (advertising pizzas they don’t have the ingredients for) is fair.

It's common knowledge that it can take up to 5 days before the money is back in your account (though it's often much sooner than that), they probably assumed you were aware of that. I don't think you should ask for compensation, that seems cheeky to me.

Kathy286 · 09/08/2026 23:30

You are the cheeky one expecting compensation. Also if you are so skint why are you wasting money on a takeaway?

AmusedMember · 09/08/2026 23:34

Compensation 🤣 honestly. Refunds take 3-5 days!

SandwichSuperstar · 09/08/2026 23:36

I remember a woman in my local FB group moaning about not receiving her takeaway and the refund taking 5 days.

She was slagging off the chicken shop no end like there was anything they could do about her bank’s policy.

She even brought her child’s ADHD into it and said he ‘went to bed starving’ 🫣

As far as I’m aware she didn’t get the compo she was after, which was a free meal 🤣

The refund was immediate, it's the banks that cause the delay.
