Just noticed that no one call me anymore. DP gone now so no one to pickup phone to. Everyone is now digital on WhatsApp, so no phone calls

Do you make phone calls? I tend to ring the people that ring me if you see what I mean. It sort of makes it seem ok to my brain.

Sorry if this situation is making you sad or feel lonely. There is definitely a shift in how people interact Vs 10-15 years ago.

I did a bit of a test. I didn’t contact anyone for a couple of weeks and guess what? Not a single person contacted me. Not one.
it was because it’s always me contacting people to get together so I thought I would see what happened.

Anyway I’ve left it. Still nothing from no one so that’s that. It’s been months now.

I know where you are coming from. I'm in touch with my DD by WhatsApp at least every few days ...but a phone call conversation? Not a chance. If I do ring she literally never picks up unless it's an emergency she knows about or maybe a favour she needs. Other than that I always have to leave a message on answer phone ...and follow up with a WhatsApp. I find it very frustrating if, for instance, I need to change an arrangement ..so much easier to have a short conversation explaining what will be best for each other rather than typing waiting for reply, typing back, waiting for reply. When did an actual short phone call become such a big deal 🤔😱

I loathe speaking on the phone. It’s easier with FaceTime as I parse conversations much easier when I can see faces. I’m much happier now I don’t have to make phone calls.

Pedant61 · 09/08/2026 22:38

I don't think any of us make phone calls any more. I literally only do it if someone has died (same with receiving calls).
What would you talk about?
Suits me fine - I never liked the phone, and I find WhatsApp allows for regular contact with friends - back in the day it was letters, and then emails, but they would only be every few weeks.

Difficult to know how to vote.

Your observation that not may people chat on the phone anymore is no unreasonable

BUT

If you are feeling sad about not chatting to people then YABU to moan about it on MN rather than doing something about it. Phone up the people you want to chat to.
Or, if you don't have friends or family willing to chat on the phone to you then Volunteer for one of the charities that offer a befriending service where you volunteer to phone people up once a week or so to have a chat with them.

Ok do you mean no one contacts you...like in my family, if I didn't bother no one would ever speak to me again. Or just they do but via messages not voice.

Actually I'm in the first camp. I have 56 first cousins, dad had 9 siblings and mum 10...2 cousins have contacted me directly in the last year. Its 40 years since my mum died and if I didn't post on fb there would be nothing...fuck em I have a brilliant happy life so who cares..
It's not important

No one wants to chat anymore
I think they’re all glued to the Internet

Tunnocks34 · 09/08/2026 23:21

Unless it’s my husband, son, mum, dad, brother, sister or grandparents I will not pick up the phone.

I let it go to voicemail and then send a WhatsApp. I loathe speaking on the phone unless I’m driving, when weirdly, I quite like it

My uni aged daughter rings me (on WhatsApp) a few times a week. My cousin does too about once a month or so. Another couple friends also call to chat, one every month or so the other every few months. The rest we just text to meet. My sisters live abroad so it’s WhatsApp due to time difference.
