AIBU to worry about eating a photo cake left in an open box?

A cake I ordered for my Dads 80th birthday was delivered to my house yesterday with the box open! It is a photo cake and personalised with a photo of my Dad. The company emailed the day before saying that I’d get a 1 hour time slot but I didn’t receive that and the box was left on my doorstep. I thought local kids may have opened it but the delivery company’s photo of the delivery showed ah open box!

The cake was loosely wrapped in plastic but I did notice one or two tiny red insects in the cardboard of the box 🤢

What would you do? Cake looks fine but I’m a bit unnerved that it’s an open box. It’s too late to sort another as it’s his birthday on Saturday (milestone birthday) 🎁

I'd probably eat it. Cakeboxes are often loosely sealed and it was wrapped in plastic. Two tiny red insects in the seams hardly mean an infestation (if it is infested then chuck it).

But I do all kinds of terrifying things by Mumsnet standards- eat tinned food after it's BBD, sniff the milk to see if it's still drinkable etc.

yes I wouldn’t feel comfortable eating it , could you ask for refund ? Use the cake for the candles/ pictures. And buy a supermarket cake to serve .

Yeah we will probably eat it to be fair, this sounds bad but I won’t mention to my folks that it arrived open, my dad wouldn’t be bothered though, he’s not the type to care about stuff like that! But do you think the company should give me a partial refund or…? It’s a special cake and I can’t not use it at this point but it’s not good that it was open.

I'd be wondering why the box arrived open and would probably inform the company, but if the cake seems fine and fresh I don't think there's anything to worry about.

I think it depends what you mean by open?

Any cake I've ever bought- whether it's from the bakery or a supermarket, has been in a front opening box with tucked in sides, and either unsealed or sealed with a single sticker.

If it was open, as in wide open, then you could maybe complain. But if it's wrapped in cellophane within the box they'll probably say that is the hygiene cover and the box is just for protecting it from knocks.

A cake box is hardly vacuumed sealed, I can't see what difference the box being open would make?

I’d stick my face in it and eat the insides but try to leave the outsides, if that’s feasible.

So no reason for it to be open, how long was it on the doorstep for?

About 1.5 hours but it was open in the delivery drivers photo.

I was imagining a completely open top box but it looks covered/ closed over and you say the cake was in plastic so I'd say it'll be fine. The dogs and cats on my road would have had a field day with that. It's a pity they didn't try a redelivery rather than just leaving it on the ground, I'd be a bit pissed off would probably tell them that.

It looks like the box has just split along the seam, probably from rough handling. The cake itself was in cellophane, I'd eat it, no problem.

It'll be fine to eat and it wouldn't even occur to me not to!

I don't know if you'd get a partial refund, but you could certainly contact the company with the photo and explain that it arrived with the box unsealed.

It's not ideal for any food gift to arrive in an unsealed box like that and if nothing else, they might want to take it up with their delivery company if they get loads of similar complaints.

Just to add - the cellophane was just a square and just loosely covered the cake.

It is icing as long as nobody licked it it will be fine. Id eat it.

Update - I emailed the company showing them the photos of the opened box etc. I didn’t ask for a refund or anything but I did mention that I was disappointed that it was open - they are sending out a whole new cake so now I have two cakes omg 🤣
