I’m just feeling a bit sorry for myself. I was rushed into to hospital last weekend had the surgery on Tuesday which was my daughter’s 16th birthday. It’s my son’s birthday today and I just feel I’ve let them both down no celebration, no day out because I’m laid up sore from abdominal surgery, can’t walk far. Can’t drive for 6 weeks and I’m meant to be going to Florida a week on Wednesday which obviously now we can’t and I didn’t have insurance so I’ve lost pretty much a 5k holiday. I’m just having the shittest summer and the guilt from the kids losing their holiday, birthdays and just having a crap summer. I don’t know how to pass these next 5 weeks there’s only so much tv I can watch I had so many plans for the summer and it’s just all gone to shit. And I’m sore, itchy and achy.

I'm sure that you've brought your kids up to be fine, empathetic people, so they will understand. Look after yourself and let other people look after you too, hope you get well soon.

You can celebrate the birthdays another time (and, at 16, their main celebration will be with their mates anyway!). And there will be other holidays.
These things happen, it's nobody's fault.

Can they go on the Florida trip without you?
At least that way someone benefits from the holiday, without watching £5k go down the drain.

Hope you feel better soon.

And next time take out insurance when you book a holiday. Is it possible to sell the trip? There is a website where you can do that.

You poor thing 😔 please don't worry about the birthdays, promise them big treats and celebrations when you're up and about and fighting fit. Are there any friends or family who can take them out and spoil them a bit for you? Rest up, order in takeaway, bingewatch a new series with them. Do an online shop for their favourite foods and cake. You didn't plan to be unwell and you shouldn't feel guilty, it's not your fault, it's just one of those unfortunate things! Losing money for the holiday is bloody awful 😖 you won't make the mistake of not having cancellation insurance next time! 💐

I’m sorry I hope you feel better soon. Last summer I was in the same boat and spent almost the whole summer in hospital including my children’s and my own birthday. It was my child’s tenth birthday and we had so much planned and it broke my heart seeing how disappointed she was. It was also the first time either child had not had a birthday cake made by me so I felt like crap even though it was unavoidable. It was even worse because we expected it to be the last birthdays I would be alive for. This year having survived we are going big for birthdays so be kind to yourself you can make it up to them when you are fit and well again. Wishing you a speedy recovery x
