AIBU to wonder if most workplaces are at least a bit toxic?

I'm only 25 but every single job I've had (four in total) has had elements that would be considered "toxic" by many to an extent. I thought my current place was actually very drama-free and a great place to work at, but since being promoted to a management position I'm beginning to see through the cracks and my peers have voiced that they think it's a toxic place to work. "Is it really?" I say, and then I think a bit harder...maybe it is...

Is it rare to find a job that isn't toxic to some degree? Do I just have to accept that most places are like this now?

I would agree with you and I’m in my 40s. Although I would say it usually comes down to the fact that all workplaces have at least one toxic person who spreads that toxicity around, either through their management of people and/or processes, or through their general conduct towards others.

I’ve never worked anywhere there hasn’t been someone like this and learning how to manage those personalities is an important part of surviving in the workplace. That said, if you find yourself being managed by someone like that, your best bet is often to get out.

I wouldn’t call my workplace toxic, maybe from an environmental perspective but not in colleague relationships terms.

It’s common for every workplace to have at least one person like that. You can either ignore it, try to change the dynamic or move on to another job although the chance of moving into another role with some level of toxicity is very high.
