To be worried about wildfires across Southern Europe?!

idontwanttomissyou · 25/07/2026 17:11

I have the holiday of a lifetime coming up in just under five weeks. It’s four weeks across southern Europe including time in Northern Italy, Southern France and Greece.

Seeing the news lately has me really anxious! When is it going to be clear if I can even travel or not, and what happens if I can’t?!

Have you travel insurance?

BMW58 · 25/07/2026 17:17

How are you getting there and travelling whilst there?

Have you travel insurance?

Yes. But the money coming back won’t make up for missing out on the trip.

Flying there. Travelling mainly by train.

I was listening on LBC earlier that the countries still want people to travel as they rely so heavily on tourism. So unless the area you’re going to is affected, then still go. There’s no point worrying about it, you can’t change the outcome.

I do get this, but I also don’t want to put myself at risk. I won’t be renting a car, so if anything happens I will be totally beholden to public transportation.

Surely the best indicator of what it might be like is looking at the last couple of years. What was it like then in the risky places.
It’s not the first year this has been a concern.

I did travel to Italy at the same time last year, to one of the same regions. It was okay there last year, they got a lot of rain overnight but nice and warm during the day.

Just don’t go to the areas that currently have wildfires.

Entirely unhelpful, thank you.

I more mean looking at reports/weather news. It’s not foolproof predictor because there’s so many variables, but gives you a sense of conditions

The French prime minister stated this morning that the situation now is unlike anything France has experienced before. The Spanish government has declared a state of emergency.

This is what concerns me. Also being without a car is troubling if something happens

Could you hire a car instead of relying on Public Transport?

I am aware but surely looking back is part of the assessment whilst understanding the escalation in risk.

Are you going anywhere near Bordeaux and the Atlantic coast?

I’ve never driven abroad before and don’t think this trip would be the time to start, lots of long distances being covered

At least you are not there now OP.

I understand your worries, but you are safe, unlike those thousands of hundreds or people and the countless animals in the affected areas.

Yes thanks for that.

I’m asking for advice on my situation.

And firefighters and army.

Just spare a thought for them.

EssCarGo · 25/07/2026 17:52

What can anyone say right now? It’s not for five weeks, really anything could happen.

This.
Guessed it was going to be about a holiday rather than a reflection on global warming, the world is burning and people are losing everything they own plus the substantial threat to life.
Travel insurance.
