Are you a hummer?

Are you a hummer or a whistler?

If so, why??

My husband wanders around the house, generally making noise... WHY???

OP posts:
StuntNun · Yesterday 16:12

Hummer. I don’t even know that I’m doing it. I can’t abide whistlers though, with their nasty tuneless noise.

Mcdhotchoc · Yesterday 16:17

I cannae bear whistling. It makes me want to kill people!

Fireyflies · Yesterday 16:41

I generally have a tune in my head more or less all the time - whatever I've heard most recently quite often. I hum without thinking about it if I'm relaxed. It takes conscious effort not to (which I do at work). I'd try first to see if you can train yourself to be unbothered by it, before asking your DH to try but to do it.

Same.

I think men do it because they want everyone to know they’re there. It’s incredibly entitled.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · Yesterday 16:55

I'm a do-do-do-er.

DonewhatIcando · Yesterday 16:56

@SorrellNightwind
Im a mutterer, I'm always muttering.
Its usually ffs or I've done what i can do or I'm sick of this shit.
Drives DP nuts, he's like "what are you muttering about now"

Mysticguru · Yesterday 17:41

Humming reduces cortisol levels (allegedly)

DrFoxtrot · Yesterday 18:40

I’m fairly sure other people humming, do-do-doing or whistling sends my cortisol level sky high.

Kleptronic · Yesterday 18:52

Yes humming, narrative, the whole thing. I’m known as a noisy one. I’m sorry world 😬

Yeah, how dare anyone express the joy they feel.

moonraker0 · Yesterday 19:42

I do it subconsciously. I’ve got ADHD and apparently it’s a form of stimming and I’ve also got a song going on in my head constantly but I don’t realise I’m doing it until someone tells me to shut up. I’ve noticed if I’m humming I’m more focused, I think I’m probably worse if I’m trying to concentrate on getting something done.

Randomlygeneratedname · Yesterday 19:48

I don't hum or whistle, I straight up sing all the time.

vegemitesandwiches · Yesterday 19:49

Neither. Both sounds make me want to stab things into my ears (autistic and very sensitive to sound). Unfortunately for me, DH has ADHD and makes a LOT of noise 😂

Hatty65 · Yesterday 19:50

I feel your pain, OP! DH is a whistler. He's very good at it, strongly in tune and LOUD.

But, oh God - he whistles all the time. I don't think he realises he is doing it. And he will get a song in his head and then whistle the same four bars of it. Over. and. over. again. For hours, if not told to STFU.

He looks hurt and says, 'Am I not allowed to be cheerful?' if you say anything.

Are you me? DH hums ALL THE TIME. Even when eating. He doesn’t know he’s doing it, he’s a noise machine.

I can’t bear loud noises, car alarms, smoke alarms, any sudden noise. I’ve asked for ear defenders for my birthday. I might never take them off….

Aluna · Yesterday 20:27

I’m a hummer, whistler and singer and my DH is a bloody saint.

JaneJeffer · Yesterday 20:33

Humming is very good for your health but whistling is likely to get you murdered.

bluebeck · Yesterday 20:37

I don’t hum or whistle but I do sing. To be fair I previously earned a living as a professional singer.

DD finds it horrifying. DS is the same as me so we harmonise 🤣

I'm almost certain he hums in his sleep as well 😂

earlyshirley · Yesterday 20:56

My MIL hates silence so hums tunelessly.
If there’s music on and we are e.g cooking, reading or generally pottering she will hum tunelessly over the top of the music and increase the volume of the humming so we can all hear it. It makes me rage. It may be better if she was humming the music we were playing but no it’s completely discordant. Why does she think we want to hear tuneless humming over the music we what to hear? She stays with us for several months at a time as well do this is all day. Faaaaaaaaark!

I him, whistle, sing, say random phrases, make random noises etc. I find it difficult to be quiet. I also tap things, pick things, move my feet constantly, twizzle my hair, play with anything that's to hand. I don't realise I'm doing it most of the time but it's been pointed out to me a lot 😬

Floogal · Yesterday 21:05

Reminds me of that vintage episode of Grange Hill. Where a few lads were disrupting a class with a synchronised organised humming 😄😄

LocalHobo · Yesterday 21:06

I'm a (female) whistler. I don't realise I'm doing it. My Father was the same. DH/DC sometimes have to tell me to shut up as I whistle in inappropriate situations. A work teams meeting was once abandoned because of the background noise. My closest colleague contacted me afterwards to tell me it was my whistle!

I feel there’s the makings of a choir on this thread, complete with percussion section.
