AIBU to be fed up with complaints about paying to watch the Commonwealth Games

Yes I get it's frustrating and annoying that the BBC aren't showing the Commonwealth Games. I'm annoyed myself.

I have Amazon Prime and have subscribed to HBO Max for £5.99. Sky subscribers can do the same for £8.99. I'll cancel when it's over.

Given that most people have Sky, AIBU to be fed up of all the grumbling I've seen? It's the price of a couple of coffees, cheaper than two pints or glasses of wine, much cheaper than 20 fags. Cheaper than Lindt chocolate truffles or a pizza.

I'm fed up of hearing "why should I pay? I've paid for a TV licence." Well you can't want to see it that much then.

I did it for 4.99 through amazon and feel I've got that back in value today!

Also the range of events you could watch was very good. About 7 screens just on gymnastics.

It is a massive shame it is not on free to air channels. I did not even realise it was happening until the opening day! I listen to 5 live and their coverage and the enthusiasm of their commentators is always fabulous! It obviously means so much to the athletes taking part and Glasgow always rises to any occasion.

I signed up for the Europa league back in May and there seemed to be a 5.99 and a 4.99 option but very little difference between the two that I could see. Either way, cheap.

I suspect more people have prime than sky, and it's cheaper that way anyway.

I also really like that the para events are happening on the same schedule. I was switching between various able bodied and para things today.

The thing about it not being on free to air channels is that no one stumbles across it whilst channel hopping and then finds themselves watching 6 hours of women's qymnastics or whatever. Honestly, this is why the winter Olympics works. Not many people were into Skeleton until we were!

Thats true but thats on the beeb for not bidding enough. I'd rather they spent the license fee on the games than on Romesh, but they seem to disagree.

Oh, is that why I've not come across it channel hopping!

I won't pay as I work full-time so would only catch an hour here and there.

Already have Prime, Netflix and Sky that I should really take a break from especially in the summer months.

I'd probably watch more of it if it was on the BBC or one of the other free channels, however, we've had lots of big sporting events this summer covered by free tv

Free tv is a misnomer anyway given it's 15 quid a month...

I think it’s great that it’s not on the BBC. Sporting events should be opt-in anyway. It makes it so much easier to avoid the tedium of things like the Commonwealth Games.

It's not goady at all or triggering. What other comparators would you have preferred?

Scotland is hosting and it’s on BBC Alba.

Under half of UK households subscribe to Sky, so most people don't have it.

Commonwealth Games should be on the BBC so everyone can access it.

I think less than 50% of households have Sky so that point you raise is wrong. Also many people can’t afford to eat so an additional cost for a subscription is not going to happen.

unfortunately this makes sport an elitist thing. Many kids from families who can’t afford Sky etc won’t get the opportunity to watch all those amazing sports and athletes and get inspired. It’s also a shame for the athletes as less people will watch them compete.

I wish people thought outside of their own situation before making these statements.

Most people do not have Sky! I don't and I don't think I know anyone who does.
