I've been friends with a group of 8 friends for the past 20 years. A few of them I haven't seen in person for a few years because they don't live locally. Generally some of us meet up as a group about once a year, which isn't often. I also get the impression that people can't or don't want to meet unless it's a group thing. Two of us still live in the same town and a few others aren't too far away. I'm definitely more of a small group or one to one person as I'm quieter. Whenever I've tried meeting up with one of my friends who's very near location wise, just for a simple coffee, she always opens it up to the rest of the group in a whatsapp group so it ends up with others travelling further to meet too. I don't necessarily mind this, but I also don't really have many friends and I had been thinking she could be someone I could meet up with a bit more regularly as she's nearby to do random and fun stuff. Its also like this with another in the group who isn't too far away and it ends up as some elaborate thing where everyone has to be invited. It doesn't seem like you can just see a friend casually, its tedious if everything has to be opened up as a group invite.
