AIBU to feel saddened by the contrast between real and marketed health?

Staying in a five star resort - mix of clientele but a lot of healthy families. People who don’t drink much (this is AI), walking lots, swimming in pool with children, reading, children included. I have also noticed lots of healthy body weights. Not super skinny, but toned and healthy. This is a range of nationalities too. It’s making me quite worried as I live in a town in the UK where weight loss injections and overt filler / Botox is rife and I can see such a divide between real health and health peddled by industry and media. Saddening and I don’t know why.

How do you know who is on WLI?

it seems like you are comparing class differences and differences in taste and aesthetics more than anything else.

Looking at beautiful rich people and feeling sad about the bloated proles in your hometown wondering why they too don't just go and relax in a 5-star all inclusive holiday as they would be much healthier?

Observant · 24/07/2026 10:05

All of the things I mentioned - low alcohol, exercise, reading etc don’t have to be a class divide though. That is my point.

Botox can be quite obvious but how the heck do you know who is on WLI @Observant ?

I mean you can't be that observant? You seem to be making huge judgement here.

Bjorkdidit · 24/07/2026 10:09

How do you know that the 'toned and healthy' people at your hotel didn't become that way due to WLI?

I agree that the fillers/botox/comedy eyebrows look is bizarre but it's not a 'health' thing as such.

This still feels like a thinly disguised dig at people you consider to be 'beneath' you in some way though.

Observant · 24/07/2026 10:11

Not judging at all - more concerned.

The toned and healthy I mentioned are not thin, on the whole. That is my point. They have differing body shapes but are active.

You're focusing on the wrong demographic in your home town. There'll be plenty of healthy people, you're just not seeing it because you're too busy being po-faced about the bad botox.

PresidentBarklett · 24/07/2026 10:23

I mean, I'm on WLI and am also toned and healthy. I do all of the things you mention above. I'm also middle class and am fortunate enough to afford this. I agree that the people you are seeing on your holiday are likely richer than the average. I also agree that you have no idea how they achieved these physiques.

It seems a bit reductionist to assume that WLI equal ill health or that the people you are seeing are not on them simply because they aren't emaciated or grey - feeling you may have fallen for some of the media spin there. Also seems quite short sighted not to consider the impact of wealth and class on life choices and outcomes.

I know Op! It’s because aspirational posh people are healthy and classy and poor feckless people pump themselves full of Botox and vapes!

That's not new is it.

You could always see "healthier" families long before the weight loss jabs became fashionable.

The jabs might just help some people to be more healthy, start to feed their own children properly for a change, so the poor kids don't become overweight and it finally breaks the cycle.

Adults on the jabs are pretty irrelevant if you look past the short term, but by accepting to have a healthier lifestyle, that's the environment they will create for their kids. Isn't that a good thing?
