How often to sweep the kitchen floor

Puppalicious · 23/07/2026 19:41

To not want to sweep the kitchen floor 3 times a day (at least) after each meal at a minimum. I know I am a complete sloven so have a skewed idea of what is reasonable, but is everyone else doing it this often? My dh gets angry if it isn’t done (he does it himself but gets very martyr-ish about it)

Twice a day - but I have spaniels that moult a lot and young adult kids who seem unable to eat a meal or cook one without scattering half of it on the floor. DH automatically picks up the broom when he comes home, which is annoying as he travels a lot so I used to feel it was a criticism or a pasagg way of telling me I’m a slob, but no he’s just a bit OCD. I ignore it now.

For me it depends on much mess is made after every meal. When it was just my husband & I, I don’t think it even got swept every day if I’m totally honest, 2 adults didn’t make much mess! Now there are 2 adults, 2 dogs and 2 very young children (one toddler, one weaning baby) I really do need to send in a cleaning squad after every meal though😂

This. Pre kids it was probably ideally done in the evening after dinner was finished. But not the end of the world if we couldn’t be bothered.

Now with several very little kids it ideally needs sweeping up and a quick mop after every meal. I don’t always get the chance to even sweep it after a meal depending on how feral the kids are being.

DH rarely bothers to do it and it pisses me off.

Tell him to feck off!! If he NEEDS it doing 3 times a day then he NEEDS to do it himself! Absolutely ridiculous! Our robovac goes round once a day!

PoppieCock · 23/07/2026 20:23

I tend to do a quick sweep and mop before work every morning.

But I’ve got a tiny kitchen so it takes five minutes.

In fairness, he does mostly clean the kitchen himself because he is not happy with the standard I or the kids do it to. Tonight the argument started because I was to clean the kitchen, and sat down without brushing under the table. He told me to do it and when I got up with the brush he swore at me, so I threw the brush down and left. Which got me thinking is even reasonable to insist on this much brushing (as I said I dont know because I’m naturally fairly messy).

This is not normal behavior. I have been with DH for over 40 years and he has never sworn at me does he do it a lot. As I asked before what else does he get angry about I bet it's not just the kitchen.

Fluffyscrubber · 23/07/2026 20:26

I hoover the kitchen once a day, sometimes twice if the kids are running in and out a lot.

I think if it was your turn to do the kitchen and you left debris under the table YABU it would annoy me if my DH half arsed a job, it’s not really taking over the chore. But your DH was also a dick.

Whatifitallgoesright · 23/07/2026 20:32

Have you considered telling him that his penis isn't clean enough for you to have sex with him? Of course this won't go well and its almost like you're saying yes if he goes for a sulky shower. Will he then do sulky sex? Can a man flounce mid-coitus?

Jopo12 · 23/07/2026 20:35

Once a week.
Or rather, my cleaner does it once a week I don't do it at all.

When my son was younger and would throw food everywhere then I did it after each meal, I had a cordless vac in the kitchen so it took a few seconds just to do around the table.

Now I don't care if it gets a bit messy, all we do is walk on it, not eat off it!

Aposterhasnoname · 23/07/2026 20:37

well I was going to say robovac, and just pull the chairs out so it can get under, but having red the rest of your posts, fuck that, he can do it himself bloody self.

Elsvieta · 23/07/2026 22:01

Presumably there are some chores that are entirely done by you, always?

Tell him the kitchen floor is his job, always, and hang up your broom.

Sharp division of labour is the way to avoid rows over housework. I do the cooking, you clear up after meals. I do the laundry, you do the hoovering. And so on. Then there's nothing to argue about.

Why are you with this idiotic and abusive man! You have far bigger fish to fry than the kitchen floor I feel!

We did try a robot hoover maybe we should try it again? Does it not get stuck on the chair legs under the table? He gets particularly exercised about under the table.

Few can get between chair legs, (possibly a Switchbot S10) but it's vac only.

Netcurtainnelly · 23/07/2026 22:17

Every other day normally and that's enough with every other household chores that needs doing. You never stop working in the house and garden.

MyPantsAreFartCentral · 23/07/2026 22:20

Puppalicious · 23/07/2026 19:51

He genuinely needs it done after every meal, not even just once a day. I don’t think he would wait for a robot hoover to do it.

Well, he needs to get off his arse and do some sweeping then.

louderthan · 23/07/2026 22:27

I do it at least twice a day, but only because I have cats who kick litter everywhere.

FlowersSunshineSand747382 · 23/07/2026 22:32

I'm so confused. Do you eat like animals? I hoover 1-2 per WEEK. I'm looking at the floor right now and it's spotless. Last time we cleaned the floor was Sunday. We have 2 small kids although I don't let them throw food on the floor etc, do you?

lazyarse123 · 23/07/2026 22:37

hereforthelolz · 23/07/2026 19:55

When I notice it needs doing is the honest answer!

if you DH doesn’t like it, let him crack on.

This. To be fair there is only me and dh but even when we had young kids I was the same. There's more to life than fretting about crumbs.
My dh is well aware that if he thinks a job needs doing he can do it.

Bloominginmyfifties · 23/07/2026 22:54

Vacuum every day at least once and spot clean if needed. No way could i leave it dirty it would really bother me.

AccidentalPrawnYouFool · 23/07/2026 22:57

Why does he get martyr-ish about it? Does he see it as not his job? Make it his job then he will be less pissed off about having to do it. And yes just sent the robot round rather than argue about hoovering. Life is too short for this bollocks.

Calmpool · 23/07/2026 23:14

As long as I’ve got time I do it whenever it needs doing which is sadly multiple times a day! I leave washing the floor to the cleaner though
