Is this unhygienic?!

I have an Airbnb on my property. It’s basically a tiny home at the bottom of our large garden with an amazing view. Most people come for the weekend by train and I don’t want people to spend their holiday shopping for stuff like coffee, tea, milk or having to cram suitcases full of toiletries or beach towels so I provide all of those. I also provide a little evening snack (crisps usually) some wine to watch the sun set on the deck with and fruit from the garden and a croissant and jam for breakfast. People love it and I make it quite clear on my ads that these things are provided.
Just got a review from a couple who stayed with us a few days ago. They gave us a good review but took one star off and in her private message to me she said ‘We loved our stay with you but we weren’t very happy that the toiletries are in big shared bottles rather than individual use. This is obviously very unhygienic (we don’t know who has used them!!) so we had to make the trip to buy some for ourselves which was an expense and effort we weren’t expecting’.
To be clear I offer Aesop Shower Gel, Shampoo and Conditioner in the shower and Aesop Hand Wash by the sink in 500ml bottles. They get replaced when empty which is usually about every 10 months

??? People don't lather themselves with shampoo and then put it back in the bottle. I can see the argument for a bar of soap, but using a pump bottle of shampoo is no different to using a soap dispenser in a public toilet. You're also not obliged to even provide this to them, they should have packed shampoo with them if they are that concerned.

Do you never use soap in public toilets either?

I wonder if the guest who refused to use your shampoo and soap don’t use the soap from dispensers in public toilets!

Yep, not unhygienic. I have recentlyish stayed at The Standard in London, the St Pancras Grand (or whatever it's calling itself these days) and the Ned and they all do these big bottles. I prefer it. My hair can take a lot of conditioner.

I find people strange though. As many have said, they will quite happily use soap in public toilets, communal ketchup and mayo bottles. My in-laws won't eat food that either I or their son makes. They will quite happily order Deliveroo, which has been touched by god alone knows how many people, in service stations and Costas etc. We are not remotely unclean. Everything is wiped down and hands washed before we start cooking. Don't lick spoons or anything like that. It's nuts.

If you touch something to get soap you do it BEFORE washing your hands and therefore all the Ebola, E. coli and other lethal bugs get washed off!

I dont think its unhygienic at all. How can it be?! You press the top and some comes out, which you use, the rest stays safely (and cleanly) inside and untouched for the next person. I honestly dont get how it could be seen as unhygienic. I'd be upset about the drop in rating too. Your place sounds amazing!

But you're washing your hands with the soap that you got from the germy dispenser ... the thing you are told to do regularly to avoid picking up too many germs.
Your hands will be clean at the end of washing them, I genuinely don't get the problem? 🤷‍♀️

People on here compete to outming themselves I. How often they shower/ how many people share one bath, washing clothes and towels etc. I'm actually surprised they whinge about dispensers when it's probably they can't take the smelly shit home with them

I always find it amusing in public toilets that they have the “no touch” flush, but you still have to draw the bolt and turn the handle to get out of the cubicle.

I also don't understand the "bar of soap is dirty" thing. You pick up the soap, create a lather, then wash the soap, any germs that might have survived being on the soap and any germs on your hands off. All you have to touch then is the tap to turn it off (unless automatic). If you're left with germs it's from the tap. I appreciate bars of soap can look a bit grim, but I don't really see how they would actually be unhygienic.

Neither do I “put my dirty unwashed public toilet hands in my bag” that is. Not sure where you read I did this. In any case don’t worry about it I’m nearly 40 and healthy as a horse so I’m sure I’m ok.

I suppose it's just the thought of strangers' poopy fingers being on the bottle is rather off-putting.

Those 'poopy fingers' might have touched the door handles, the stair railings, the lift buttons, other items in the supermarket that you also pick up.
In all honesty, I'd rather 'poopy finger' germs on the soap dispenser, just before I'm definitely going to wash my hands than any of the other places.

They’re being absolutely ridiculous. I’ve worked in hotels and hospitality most of my life, including some very nice ones and they usually have the same sort of set up. Some do have individual bottles of things but a move to be more eco friendly in recent times has led to things being refillable. You honestly can’t please everyone - chances are if you did provide individual tiny bottles someone would complain about the waste of plastic!
