Annoyed with DH

I am off work all summer. DH working full time. Today he arrived home and goes to his workshop outside where he often catches up on phone calls. I was cooking dinner when he comes in to kitchen and I ask if he can pick up DS from football in 10 mins as I’m in the middle of doing dinner. He says he can’t as he has just smoked some weed. He offered to take over the cooking so I can go but I just got annoyed. The weed itself wasn’t the issue. He does smoke a bit from time to time as he says it helps with sleep and to calm anxiety. I don’t agree with it but he is a grown adult and can make his own decisions. I didn’t feel like explaining to him what needed doing for dinner (3 separate pots of things) It would just have been easier to finish it myself. I said it was unfair that I was just expected to pick up DS while he could just opt out. He said he didn’t know he’d be needed to do any driving and I hadn’t asked him and that he has been working all day and was only just in the door and needed something to unwind. I did do the pick up and as I ended up waiting in the car for longer than usual I texted him with instructions on dinner. I helped finish it off when I got back. I was still feeling pissed off and was a bit snappy with him.
He says I’m wrong to be annoyed and he did nothing wrong. AIBU?

Actually the law states you can drive with cannabis in your system, you have a prescription for it and are ‘not impaired’

So, it’s not ‘really wrong’ to drive. I personally don’t, but just letting you know the legalities.

The legal limit is 2 micrograms per litre of blood. This is very low. Even if you have a prescription for cannabis, it will still be illegal to drive with over the limit in your blood.

Not quite. You’re quoting the limit, but leaving out the statutory medical defence.

The law specifically allows prescribed medical cannabis patients to drive, even if they’re over 2 µg/L, provided they’re taking it as prescribed and are not impaired.

That’s why the defence exists in the first place.

All these people defending the pot head.

I wouldn't live with someone who takes drugs

Yeah, it feels very wrong and yes, it is different to drinking a glass of wine.

I must live in a parallel universe to most of you guys. Because even if I was off the whole summer I don’t think I would need to book an app with my husband on a Wednesday night at dinner time to collect our son. I certainly would not expect or tolerate him being in the garage smoking weed when we have kids. So I think the OP is right to be annoyed.

He actually needs to grow up and behave like a responsible adult.

OuijaBoard · 23/07/2026 23:11

What's the usual situation with DS and football? Does he normally get a lift from someone else but unexpectedly needed picked up today, or do you usually pick him up and so DH just assumed you would without checking, or do you take turns and it was your turn, or ...?

It seems to me that if it's acceptable and normal for him to smoke weed in his clubhouse before dinner, it would be equally acceptable and normal for you to have been guzzling the cooking wine Julia Child-style, and DS would have needed a taxi or Uber or whatever's available.

Rubbish.

He came home and smoked a big fat ‘get out of parenting duties’ spliff in the busiest part of the day.
He didn’t know his own child needing picking up? Or that there were a zillion other things to do?

Nah.

Really?
Genuinely not condoning the pot usage but op is on summer holidays. It’s not a mad rush to get everything done after school/work. It sounds like they have 1 dc who is clearly not a toddler. Why make dinner right at the time when he needs collecting? Have dinner later, or have something quicker if it’s a club night. No need whatsoever for all the palaver. It doesn’t sound like it is usually her dh’s job to pick up dc otherwise I’m sure she would have mentioned that. So he wasn’t expecting to be asked and she left it until right at the last minute.

Using pot when your child is awake/around is not on so I definitely judge him for that. But if we replaced the pot with a beer when he got home then it is pretty obvious to me that op is being unreasonable here.

The guy doesn’t have a prescription though, and the thread is about him not you.

I'm amazed at the amount of people on here ,who would seemingly be ok with a parent smoking weed around their child .
Op has not said he gets it on prescription
He's buying it on a grubby street corner
Children are like little sponges soaking up their surroundings
Monkey see ,monkey do ..
Op .don't be surprised when you have a weed smoking teenager
And if that is ok with you ..well crack on then

Lurker85 · 24/07/2026 07:37

Taking the weed out of the equation,What if he had been out there on calls for another 20 minutes? What would you have done then? I feel like you lured him into a trap to martyr yourself. You should have asked him about pick up as soon as he walked in, the fact that you didn’t meant you either did it on purpose or forgot your child needed picking up. Which I doubt as you’d have known he wasn’t there as you’d had all day off. Unlike your husband, who wasn’t there and who unsurprisingly would have presumed your son’s pick up was in hand as you hadn’t mentioned it and were just merrily plodding along making dinner.
