AIBU to think there must be or should be a holiday accommodation site that allows you to filter ‘no pets allowed'

Due to dog fur allergy I always avoid booking accommodation that is marketed as dog friendly but I just wish I could filter for the opposite.

I’m also severely allergic to dogs (anything with fur as it turns out) and asthmatic. I’ve had an allergy induced asthma attack from a dog owner’s cardigan before. People really have no idea how much you need to clean after a pet owner has stayed.

You can't guarantee a "no dogs" property is clean of pet hair.

Guide dogs are allowed everywhere, and not all dog owners take their dogs on holiday (but their clothes will still have fur on).

So you could still have a "no dogs" property which has dog hair.

I understand the guide dog risk but it is vanishing rare, there’s on only around 3 thousand in total in the UK and they tend not to roll over the furniture etc.

On the other hand there are about 16 million dog owners,

Im sure i have seen it on some sites that you can filter pet free, but obviously not all.

We dont have allergies but were caught out once where a place had a very distinctive dog smell which we found unpleasant (but obviously not harmful, like an allergy would be)

If you go to Sykes cottages you can filter to only show pet free accommodation. Is that what you mean?
holidaycottages uk also has a filter you can tick to only show you pet free holidays.

I think there is a filter on there.
plus you can speak directly to the owner.
My son has severe dog and cat allergies. We recently stayed in a cottage by the sea in North Wales. The owner was allergic to pets too and so understood our situation. I asked about guide dogs etc and while they would have to accept them, they agreed to let us know if they got a booking from one and then would allow us to cancel. It was fine in the end.

Yes but just above yours there's a post from someone who's had an allergic reaction to someone's cardigan because it belonged to a dog owner.

Dog owner goes to dog-free holiday cottage, transfers dog fur from cardigan to sofa cushion, that triggers an allergic reaction, despite no dogs ever actually being present.

No-one is ever going to be able to guarantee that a room or cottage is allergen free because that way lies lawsuits. You'd have to have the following rules:

1. no dogs (reasonable)
2. no dog owners (rather hard to enforce)
3. no guide dogs (illegal)

That’s grim for sure.

I’d love a cafe search for dog free too.

But I’m not looking for an allergen free cottage on the search so there’d be no come back. I’m just looking for accommodation that doesn’t allow pets because for me that’s high risk.

Completely with you OP. I stay away for work a lot, like every week. Every week I have to play dog-dander roulette. Sometimes I’ll be at a hotel and feel my airways closing up. I’ve even been to reception and demanded a different room because they’d allocated the disabled room - I stepped foot in it and it instantly smelled of dog.

I also, as a point of principle, immediately chuck the fancy cushions and throw off the bed and to the other side of the room because it just gives me the ick knowing a dog’s bottom has been lounging on those items.

unfortunately my work also has a dog friendly policy.
not in my actual office room but the room across the corridor has a worker who brings his dog in.

I also agree more because dog friendly places look scruffy and tired, especially the sofas and bed area and gives me the ick.

As PP have said, some sites have this but I wish more did. In general we could do with more filters. My big bugbear is not being able to filter by number of beds rather than how many it sleeps as a max. number.

There is a filter 🤷‍♀️ I’ve not come across a site where there isn’t one.

I have a dog, but only stay in hotels with him. So basically one room.
We pay an extra cleaning fee per day(!) for the dog.
The place should be spotless for the next customer as far as I’m concerned.

In a cottage, spending 10 minutes with a few sticky rolls on the furniture should remove 99% of dog hair.
Not something you’d want to do yourself if you have an allergy though.

Should there be a search filter? Yes.

Slightly off topic but I went to a pub earlier this week for an evening meal that only allows dogs inside between 12 - 3pm. I've never seen that before and although it wouldn't help anyone with a fur allergy I thought it was a really good compromise.

I have 2 properties with Marsdens (Travel Chaper group). One will accept up to 3 dogs. Books very well, mostly with dogs. My other one is strictly no dogs. I need guests to trust what they are coming to stay in. You can filter on the website and then always question before booking.
In nearly 20 years of hosting, I have never had a guide dog to stay.
